Default Performing dolphin killed in freak mid-air collision at American theme park

Their final joyful leap from the water had been a showstopper for years.

But an acrobatic display at the Florida theme park ended in horror when two dolphins collided head on as they jumped towards each other.

One was killed, although the other appeared unharmed.

Spectators saw the stunt go wrong at the last show of the day at Discovery Cove in Orlando.

Park officials say they are reviewing training practices.

The accident happened as the dolphins, Sharky and Tyler, performed their routine trick.

But as they burst out of the deep water into a victory leap, they rammed into each other, sending Sharky, a 30-yearold bottlenose, tumbling back into the water.

Her trainers, who were treading water nearby, led her back to shallow water and cradled her as she lay dying.

"It was an unfortunate and random incident," said a park spokesman.

"It's an atmosphere where the dolphins pretty much say what they want to do. The trainers don't ever force them. It is all through positive reinforcement."
Discovery Cove promises visitors a 'close-up' dolphin encounter, including the chance to swim with the creatures.
More than 30 of them are in captivity at the park.

    Fuck. Poor creature.

Not that its life and the conditions it was kept in weren't appalling to begin with.

Not surprised.. dolphins go after sharks all the time and ram em to death with their beaks.

Bet the other dolphin feels pretty stupid now.

I am very saddened by reading this...

Normally tragic animal deaths don't get to me much but something about this is hitting me...

Poor baby. She was 30 years old. I didn't realized they were that long-lived. I hope they gave her a good life while she was with the park.

So very sad. I feel sorry for the surviving dolphin because I'm sure it knows that it's partner is gone. They are very smart and sensitive animals.

WOW that is really sad. I can't imagine how the trainers must feel either...they get so close with those animals they are like children to them. My heart goes out to everyone there...poor dolphin .

how stupid it is to capture wild animals from their natural habitat in the open sea and make them perform tricks for our amusement. We humans are really unevolved.
