Default DNA samples taken from polygamists' kids

Using cotton swabs and cameras, lab technicians began taking DNA samples Monday from hundreds of children and mothers — many in long, pioneer-style dresses — in hopes of sorting out the tangled family relationships within the West Texas polygamist sect.

A judge ordered last week that the genetic material be taken to help determine which children belong to which parents.

Authorities need to figure that out before they begin custody hearings to determine which children may have been abused and need to be permanently removed from the sect compound in Eldorado, and which ones can be safely returned to the fold.

State social workers have complained that over the past few weeks, sect members have offered different names and ages. Also, the children refer to all of their fathers' wives as their "mothers," and all men in their families as "uncles."

The testing went on behind closed doors at the crowded coliseum where the children seized in the raid earlier this month on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are staying.

The collecting of DNA is likely to take 10 technicians most of the week, and it will be a month or more before the results are available, said Janiece Rolfe, a spokeswoman for the Texas attorney general's office.

Rod Parker, an FLDS attorney, acknowledged that family names within the sect can be confusing, but said: "No one is trying to deceive anyone. ... It's not sinister." Instead, he said that because many of the sect's marriages are not legal, adults and their children may legally have one name but use another within the community.

The April 3 nighttime raid on the 1,700-acre compound probably frightened the children, said Ken Driggs, who has studied the sect extensively. "If somebody had taken the time to approach them in a way that was respectful, they probably would have gotten the information they needed," Driggs said.

The children will be placed in group homes or other quarters until individual custody hearings can be completed by early June. Officials said they will try to keep siblings together when possible, though some polygamous families may have dozens of siblings.

The testing will involve 437 children and possibly hundreds of adults. State authorities revised their count of the children from 416 as they developed better lists and discovered that not all the female members who claimed to be adults were over 18.

The testing will be more far complicated than that of the typical custody or support case.

In a typical custody case, "maternity is already established," Rolfe said, but in this case, researchers will have to determine the identity of both parents.

Each person who submits to a test will be photographed, and the inside of his or her cheek will be swabbed to remove cells for analysis.

The DNA sampling is an enormous undertaking for a state that typically tests only 1,000 children a year.

Some of the adults have ordered by the state of Texas to submit to testing. Others are being asked to do so voluntarily. But how many will do that is unclear.

Parker said he is afraid authorities secretly intend to use the DNA to build criminal cases. But state Child Protective services spokesman Greg Cunningham said: "We're not involved in the criminal investigation. That's not our objective."

Authorities believe the sect forces underage girls into marriages with older men. No one has been arrested, but a warrant has been issued for member Dale Barlow, a convicted sex offender who has said he has not been to the Texas site in years.

I by no means agree or condone this type of lifestyle, no way.

HOWEVER, I do have to wonder what the state is going to do with all of these kids, now that they have them. I mean....it's ALL THEY'VE KNOWN! It doesn't seem quite right to me. Yet, leaving them in an abusive situation of any kind is certainly not right either!!

I don't know....its damned if they do, damned if they don't. No winners here.

Except for the pervs who have 30 wives and 300 kids. They win somehow.

I hope not. I hope those who "married" little girls go to jail!

This is sick. The only thing worse than those FLDS people is what the government is doing to them. Does anyone really think those kids are better off in foster care??

As a female, I think I'd rather take my chances in foster care than growing up in an environment where I'd be forcibly married off to an old man (who might do god-knows-what to me) as soon as I became physically able to breed. And probably with the barest of knowledge about how sex and babies worked.

There's a term for women/girls in a life like that when religion isn't involved...it's called "sex slave".

Well, let's see ... in the cult they are brainwashed from birth, receive little to no education, don't have any chance for normal relationships, live without any displays of normal love and affection, are married off at a ridiculously early age to old men, forced to obey without question and pump out baby after baby, watch these children get fondled from infanthood and think it's okay because they were raised the same way, be horribly abused by their husbands if they don't obey without question, watch their children be abused if they don't obey without question ... gee, do I really need to go on?

Girls and women are used as mindless brood mares. Boys are either discarded at mid teens as superflous, or brainwashed to think sex with a 12 year old is his "duty".
Foster care at its worse can't compare with this-at least you escape by 18! Unwed.

exactly. but when it's done 'in the name of god', it's supposed to be more acceptable?

OMG YES! They are a million times better off in foster care than in that crazy cult. I've been watching interviews with some of the boys who were kicked out. (They kick the boys out early cuz they can't have any competition for the old guys) It was a terrible existence. The girls are raised as breeding stock and slaves that cater to the older men. They have no rights. They have no future. Their fates are sealed from birth. Can you imagine having to start popping out babies at fourteen? I hope all these old fuckers who raped these young girls get ass fucked for years in jail.

The women piss me off too. Yes I know they were brainwashed. But what happened to maternal insticts? I don't know how they could just sit by mindlessly while their young girls were raped. And they still defend this way of life.

Anyway emphatically YES they are better off in foster care.

Polygamy is really sick...woman and children have no rights and the abuse is horrible. I was reading about this polygamist group called the Kingston clan that are based in Salt Lake City. Apparently they believe they are direct discendents of Jesus and only breed with their own bloodline. Uncles and nieces, brother and sister that kind of thing. Needless to say, birth defects are common with this group. Most of the time the women give birth at home so much of this info doesn't get out plus they are extremely secretive. They are a really powerful group and own lots of businesses in the area. They also get alot of their money from the wives claiming to be single mothers and collecting welfare benefits. These women have 5 or more children apiece so you can imagine the $$$ coming in. The men in the group will have one legal wife and then take many "spiritual" wives. some have 10 or 15 wives that live in trailers and hovels in substandard conditions all while collecting welfare checks that they hand over to the men. Young girls are giving to uncles and brothers as wives and if they refuse, they are beaten or locked away. I can't believe that goes on in these days and times!!

Its not only the molestation of children, its also the repression of women. Those young women will never have a chance to have a life ot their own if they are not taken out of that situation. They are really going to need a lot of counseling.

And why didn't our government go in and rescue all the altar boys?

Having lived in Utah, I can believe it happens. The only reason the Kingston clan is out in the public eye is because a teenage girl ran away because she didn't want to get married. They busted some other polygamist for taking welfare money from the state a few years ago. Can't remember his name though.
