Family killed in Texas; 4 youths held - Yahoo! News

A mother and two children were killed in a predawn attack at their remote East Texas ranch, which burned to the ground, and four young people who knew the family will be charged with murder, authorities said.
The father was in critical condition with a gunshot wound, Rains County Sheriff David Traylor said at a news conference.
Three high school students and a juvenile were arrested and booked into the Rains County jail. The two males and two females will be charged with three counts each of capital murder, Traylor said.
The family had a teenage daughter, but Traylor did not provide information on her whereabouts. The dead were a 39-year-old woman and two boys, ages 8 and 13, Traylor said.
"It's the scariest thing," Traylor said. "You don't know what to make. I guess you imagine the worst and hope for the best."
Authorities were tightlipped on details, but Traylor said autopsies have been ordered.
The house sat on at least 20 acres of pine-canopied, remote land on a narrow gravel road with just two other homes, Traylor said. Alba is about 60 miles northeast of Dallas.
Harold Read, who lives about a mile away, said he was awakened by what he thought was thunder around 4 a.m., the time when authorities were first called to the house.
"All you read about out here are ticky-tacky crimes in the local paper," said Read, 67. "I never lock my doors. This is a quiet place."
By late Saturday, firefighters sifted through the ash and singed metal that was all that remained from the house. A wooden sign tacked to a tree in the family's dirt driveway read "Joshua 24:15," and a burned van was parked near where the home once stood.
Joshua 24:15, a verse from the Old Testament, reads in part, "But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."

So when it says that the surviving teenage girl's whereabouts are unknown, does that imply that she was a co-conspirator?

I feel bad for the father of the family who has just lost his wife and two children.

That's creepy. The bible verse, I mean. And in Texas? I wouldn't be surprised if this family happened to be non-christians and someone(s) got their panties in a bunch over it.

Any news on this story as to motive?

As much as I hate to suggest this, I think the daughter and her friends were the culprits. It's just too convenient to not release any info about the daughter, including her age, when they have provided details on the mom and 2 sons. They have also not released the ages of those arrested, other than to say 3 high school students and a juvenile. Sad...but I believe true~

    Sadly....it's exactly as I suspected~

Dispute over teen girl's romance likely led to fatal East Texas shooting06:19 PM CST on Sunday, March 2, 2008 Associated Press

EMORY, Texas – Church services in this rural town were deadened by grief Sunday after police charged a teenage girl, forced by her parents to breakup with a boyfriend, with helping kill most of her family. The pre-dawn raid on the home of Terry and Penny Caffey on Saturday left the girl's mother and two brothers dead and her bloodied father crawling through the woods for help.

Penny Caffey and her two sons, ages 8 and 13, were shot and stabbed repeatedly in the pre-dawn attack Saturday. Terry Caffey, the father, was undergoing surgery Sunday afternoon for four gunshot wounds, including two to his back, after police say he crawled 300 yards to his closest neighbor while his house burned to the ground with his family inside. The 16-year-old girl, who police confirmed as the family's daughter but whose name was withheld because of her age, was arraigned Sunday on three counts of capital murder and was being held on $1.5 million bond. Three others between the ages of 18 and 20, including the girl's suspected boyfriend, were arraigned on the same charges and given the same bond.

"Early on in the investigation, it was revealed that the juvenile and one of the suspects were dating and made to break up," the Rains County Sheriff's Department said in a release. Charlie James Wilkinson, 19; Charles Allen Wade, 20; and Bobbi Gale Johnson, 18, all of Emory, were being held at the Rains County jail. It was not immediately clear if they had attorneys. The 16-year-old daughter is confined in neighboring Hunt County's juvenile detention center in Greenville. Investigators said she was found hiding at the home of one of the suspects, though it was not immediately clear which of the suspects she was dating.

The scene of the attack was about 20 acres of pine-canopied, remote woodland in Alba on a narrow gravel road with just two other homes. The town is about 60 miles northeast of Dallas in Rains County, the second-smallest county in Texas. The victims were identified as Penny Caffey, 37, and sons Tyler, 8, and Matthew, 13. All were members of Miracle Faith Baptist Church, where about 80 congregants wept on blue-cushioned pews and clutched small children to their side during a somber Sunday morning sermon. Pastor Todd McGahee struggled to keep his composure as he remembered Penny "getting after it" on the church piano and her sons playing guitar with her. "When I first heard, I was like, 'I don't even think I would have crawled out of the house,"' McGahee told worshippers. "But God has a purpose for Terry's life. God has a reason. God gave him the strength to get out."

McGahee implored worshippers to pray for the Caffey's daughter and not blame the parents of the suspects, at least one of whom attended the small church. "There's been a change in this church and a change in this community," McGahee said. "And we can't just wish it away. ... It will be the same loss, the same hurt tomorrow. There's been that change in our lives."

Carl Johnson, a friend of the family, said the family moved about two years ago to just outside this rural farming town of about 1,500. He called the family good Christians and said he often told the daughter that he wanted her soft singing voice to perform at his funeral. "They didn't like the boy and were trying to break them up," Johnson said. "They told me at church they didn't have any use for him."

Autopsies have been ordered on the dead family members. Rains County Sheriff David Traylor said investigators haven't been able to determine whether the fire or gunshots caused their deaths because "the bodies have been so badly burned." Authorities said they have recovered one weapon and are searching for another.

The family's home sat about three miles off U.S. 69, the main two-lane highway near Emory. Hay bales, horses and cattle dot the landscape down the county road leading to their secluded house, where a picnic table and burned van sit near the pile of black ash that is all that remains of the homes. A wood sign tacked to a tree in the family's dirt driveway read "Joshua 24:15," a verse from the Old Testament that reads, in part, "But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."

^There was obviously something wrong with this girl to begin with. I can't believe she helped torture her little brothers and her own mother. I hope her father makes it through ok. I hope she never sees her stupid boyfriend again, not to mention the light of day either.

Not only did her boyfriend kill her family, but then they had sex afterwards and called it a night. I have been following this on the news and its positively mind-blowing. The authorities believed she was dead until they found her hiding in her friend's apartment. On her LiveJournal account, she posted that she was trying to get pregnant. And she evidently knew this guy for SIX WEEKS. For the last month they've been planning the murder. They said that originally they weren't going to kill the boys but they were there as they killed their mother (and tried to kill their father), and then they ordered them upstairs. Then they figured that they couldn't just leave since they saw them, and went upstairs and killed them both (stabbing the younger one with a sword). The second guy went along with it for $2000! Its just crazy.

Yeah but she's only sixteen. Her name is all over as well, her name is Erin Caffey. I don't see why she should be protected if she will be tried as an adult, which I'm pretty sure she will be. But even at that, if they try her as an adult, she will be able to skirt the DP. The two guys will no doubt fry. The girl will probably get a maximum sentence for being an accomplice.

    THE CASE TIMELINE
The timeline of events, as they happened. You can also read the affidavit arrest report, which goes into detail further. It can be found here (arrest.pdf).
SOMETIME IN THE WEEK– Wilkinson learns his MySpace page was hacked by Erin’s father, Terry. A student told me that Erin had did some modification to Wilkinson’s MySpace profile, resulting in the password being left out. This is how Wilkinson’s page was “hacked.”
FRIDAY– Terry Caffey tells Erin Caffey that she is no longer allowed to see Charles Wilkinson & takes away her cell phone.
FRIDAY NIGHT– The four of them, Erin, Charlie, Charles, and Bobbi discuss murdering Erin’s parents. Waid is offered $2,000 to help, the jewelry & money that was stolen was to help offset the cost.
SATURDAY– 4AM– Wilkinson breaks into the house, with Waid. They enter the bedroom, where both Terry and Penny Caffey are asleep in their bed. Wilkinson fires a .22 at Penny. Wilkinson hands Waid the gun, who tries his hand at shooting the parents.
Wilkinson screams at Matthew Caffey & Tyler Caffey to go back to bed. Waid follows them to their bedroom and shoots Matthew Caffey in the head and neck and stabbed the 8-year-old boy with a sword. Wilkinson also stabs Tyler Caffey, to make sure he’s dead.
Wilkinson and Waid take cash and jewelry, from the parents bedroom, which they take with them. Using pocket lighters, they set fire to the house by igniting the bedspreads, laundry, food items & furniture. I assume they did this to prevent DNA from being left at the scene.

The four left the house, Wilkinson and Caffey were dropped off at Waid’s house, where they had sex and slept. Sure, you go off and murder your family members, then you spread your legs open, and fuck. Real great youngsters you are, shit heads. Shows me that even in the end, you’re master plan still backfired. Your magical one night of WOW turned into a big OW.
Police went to Wade’s house, where Wilkinson & Dickinson were taking in for questioning. Wilkinson confessed to the murders, as did Waid & Johnson. Dickinson, our mystery individual, told authorities he didn’t have knowledge, but we have 200 e-mails that state otherwise. As noted, Dickinson knew that something was supposed to take place a week before the 29th, obviously, it was held out for another week.
When police went back to the Waid residence to execute a search warrant, they found a small purse, which belong to Erin Carrey, with her Texas ID inside the purse. They thought she was dead. They found her, in the fetal position, under clothes & stuffed animals. She told authorities that she was asleep when two people told her to get on the floor. Erin told authorities she remembers the fire but nothing else, which is a lie, folks. She knew of what was going on, she planned it.
Terry Caffey was the only survivor. He had been shot five times. He managed to walk 300 yards to a neighbor, who called 911 & reported the incident. Terry was transported to an area hospital, and was released 03/04/08.
The four killers are arrested, Erin’s name wasn’t released to the media because she is a minor. Who gives a shit, she plotted the entire event herself, convincing her boyfriend, Wilkinson, to take part.
Bobbi, Charles, Charlie, and Erin are charged with captial murder. If convicted, they face life in prison or the death penalty. Erin’s age is unique. If they try her as an adult, she could get life in prison, though the death penalty would be void. If she was charged as a juvenile, she could serve up to 40 years, but be eligible for parole at 19. They should try her as an adult.

No more Romeo and Juliet tragedies in this modern world. Today's teens just turn it around and kill their own families and run off together.

I grew up with a mom and dad and two younger brothers. Sure, they all got on my nerves from time to time for various reasons...hell there were probably even times I even felt like I "hated" them. But I can't even contemplate dating and falling "in love" with any boy/man/whatever and then wanting/contemplating having my family murdered to be with him, much less carrying it out.

And what must it be like to be that man (her father) who lived? Imagine giving birth to a baby daughter and one day being the lone survivor after your wife and other kids have been murdered (she might as well have been the one to actually pull the trigger) by your own flesh and blood.
