U.S. seeking death penalty for six 9/11 suspects
'Mastermind': Khalid Sheik Mohammed is facing the death penalty
The U.S. last night charged the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks and five of his accomplices, and asked that they be executed if convicted.
The six are accused in the first major prosecution connected to the terror strikes of September 11, 2001, which left nearly 3,000 dead.
Most prominent among the accused is Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who has confessed to plotting and co-ordinating the attacks on New York and Washington.
But his confession could be problematic if used as evidence because the CIA has admitted it subjected him to "waterboarding" - simulated drowning.
It is widely considered to be torture and the rules of the court at the Guantanamo prison camp prohibit the use of evidence obtained through torture, as does an international treaty the U.S. has signed.
The other five defendants include alleged Al Qaeda financiers, intermediaries and trainers. They are the first Guantanamo Bay detainees to face charges over 9/11.
They will also be the first to go on trial under America's new terrorism-era military tribunal system.
Charges against them include hijacking, murder, attacking civilians, terrorism and destruction of property.

Among the six being charged are Mohammed al-Qahtani, labelled by military officials as the 20th hijacker, and Ramzi Binalshibh, said to have been the main intermediary between the hijackers and leaders of Al Qaeda.
Also charged are Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, known as Ammar al-Baluchi, a nephew of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who has been identified as Mohammed's lieutenant for the 2001 operation; al-Baluchi's assistant, Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi; and Waleed bin Attash, who investigators say selected and trained some of the hijackers.

It has been widely criticised for its rules on legal representation for suspects, holding hearings behind closed doors and past allegations of inmate abuse at the U.S. detention camp in Cuba.
Officials plan to hold the trial in a specially constructed court at Guantanamo that will allow lawyers, journalists and some others to be present, but leave relatives of September 11 victims and others to watch the trial through CCTV.
It could be months or longer before trials begin as the defendants are given time together to prepare their cases.

so, uh, whatever happened to the 3 or 4 9/11 hijackers that were supposed to have died that day, but amazingly turned up alive in various countries, even though their barely damaged passports were miraculously "found" in the rubble?
Doesn't anybody find that odd?
