Default This is what cigarettes do to you, warns anti-smoking campaigner hours before death

It would have been natural for Maureen Hamilton to have chosen a glamorous picture as the one by which she could be remembered.

Taken 22 years ago, the cool blonde smiles easily for the camera, confident in her beauty and her jet-set lifestyle.
Fast-forward two decades and the picture on the left reveals a very brave but broken woman, all the glitz and glamour pitilessly stripped away by the emphysema caused by her addiction to cigarettes. Scroll down for more...

It is this second haunting image that 58-year-old Mrs Hamilton was determined the world should remember as she campaigned to shock others into giving up tobacco before it is too late.
Speaking from her sick-bed hours before her death last week, the mother of two said: "When I was growing up, smoking was glamorous. Film stars would pose for the cameras with a cigarette in their hand.
"I remember buying a single cigarette from the shop for threepence, then smoking it at a cafe, hoping the boys would notice.
"I moved on to a pack of five, then ten, and when I started working it was 20, and I would smoke a pack a day. I didn't realise it at the time but I was a pretty, young woman.
"It's only later, when you look in a mirror at what is left and see a photo as you used to be, that you realise how things have changed.
"I don't want anyone to suffer like I am. It is unimaginable and the pain is so horrendous I have to take morphine every day." Scroll down for more...
Maureen publicised horrific photographs of what emphysema had reduced her to

Mrs Hamilton, a restaurant manager from Cambridge, lived a jet-set lifestyle as a young woman and was whisked to parties around the Mediterranean and Middle East.
One one occasion she was swept off her feet by a man who took her to his palace in Beirut.
At a party in Cairo, an Arab prince offered her £20,000 to spend the night with him.
She refused, saying: "I'm not that kind of girl."
The first warning shot over her health came in 1977, when she was 28.
She developed pneumonia on her way back from Israel and doctors advised her to go to a hospital that specialised in lung diseases.
She refused, saying she was scared.
Twenty years and countless cigarettes later, Mrs Hamilton collapsed and lost consciousness shortly after flying home from the Dominican Republic in 1997.
She was diagnosed with emphysema, an irreversible degenerative condition which makes breathing difficult as the lungs fill with fluid.
Doctors told her it had been developing for the best part of two decades.
She was to spend the rest of her life "shuffling from one room to another dragging an oxygen bottle with me".
Her last few years were a living hell in which she was kept alive on a ventilator while helpers spoon-fed her and cleared blockages from her airways with forceps.
She was moved to the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge early last week.
Speaking earlier this year, she said: "I know giving up smoking is a struggle. But smokers don't see people in hospital hooked up to machines dying slow, painful, undignified deaths and they should.
"I hope my story can stop even one person smoking."
She arranged for posters of her to be used to highlight the damage smoking can cause and wanted children to visit her so that she could warn them of the dangers.
Amanda Sandford, of the anti-smoking group ASH, said yesterday: "I spoke to Maureen a couple of months ago. She was desperate to pass on her experience to try to prevent young people smoking.
"I hope her message lives on in some way. It would be a fitting tribute."
Mrs Hamilton's daughter Zoe, 41, said: "Mum was a tough cookie. "She was a campaigner to the end and hoped her death would at least stop others from smoking."

But people have the ignorant attitude of 'that wont happen to me' and will continue lighting up.

The only thing worse than having to gulp a lungful of cig smoke from some person nearby is listen to them hack, spew and gurgle.

Seriously, there's a guy who lives in the house next to us.. the guy is on the porch every morning coughing so fucking hard it sounds like he's throwing up over and over.... WHILE he's smoking. It's so loud it echoes up and down the street and it sounds like he's throwing up. It's so fucking revolting. I've yelled at him to go the fuck back inside and get himself looked at cuz I don't want to listen to that shit.

I swear to god he's bringing down property values just by existing. I wish he would die and get it over with. I really do. I've never heard antyhing more disgusting in all my life.

and he's only in his early 20's.

my mom died of lung cancer. it was not a pretty death by any stretch of the imaginination. my brother watched her die, and continues to smoke 23 yrs later. however, my dad quit immediately after she passed, and he had smoked for 60 yrs.

^^^There is no logic to addiction. I love many very good people who smoke, some are related to me and others are not. I don't know that there is such a thing as a 'pretty death', even those who live long and die of natural causes suffer long before they actually die (I know you didn't mean that literally). And who knows? It may not happen to your brother and there are others who quit who were still diagnosed 20 yrs later with cancer. No one knows when their time is up. However, I take exception to all the smokers with lung cancer bashing since I don't see people giving the same lashing to 42 yr old women trying to conceive who come down with congestive heart failure or some other pregnancy related disease. I mean, they knew what the risks were having a baby at their age, and they chose to do it but I don't hear them being called stupid when they either end up dead/near death or with a retarded 3 eyes baby. No one finger points to them and says, "Well, you knew the risks so you have no one to blame for yourself", blah blah blah. Well, I guess having a real chemical addiction is just not anywhere near as powerful as the urge to procreate. Sigh.

uh, I call those people stupid all the time.

They lay there being all cancerous and I just think "it's nice that you're speaking out NOW that it's causing you to DIE horribly, but wtf were you thinking you sickly yellow retard?"

it rings a bit hollow.

The same for the woman who decided to have a fecking baby in her 40's despite warnings.. again, you get old FOR A REASON.

Ugh, there was a guy who lived next to my school bus stop and he used to come out into his front yard every day and cough and spit and sometimes puke his guts up every morning. I swear there were lumps of lung flying about. Then he'd light up........

I really don't see the point of these terminally people giving lectures about the evils of smoking. EVERYONE knows that it will probably kill you one way or another yet they continue to smoke because dying is for, like, totally OLD people like when they are 45 or something totally OLD.

Totally agree. Obviously, it was making them ill in one way or another, whether allergies, immunity, people like that make me want to puke.

20 years will do that to a person. Who's to say its the smoking? If a picture was taken 20 years ago of myself I would look better too. Bad genetics, not necessarily smoking.
