Driver In Fatal Crash Facing Fourth DUI Charge - News Story - WPTZ Plattsburgh
COLCHESTER, Vt. -- Vermont State Police said a drunken driver headed the wrong way on Interstate 89 slammed into another car full of five teenage boys, killing one of them.
Police said the driver, Shawn Burritt, 32, of Jericho, took off running after he plowed into the teen's Volvo around 12:30 a.m. near Colchester.
Police said the force of the impact killed Nick Fournier, 18, of Swanton, who was riding in the Volvo Burritt hit. Police said Fournier was riding in the rear of the car.
The Swanton community is mourning the loss of Fournier, a recent graduate of Missisquoi Valley Union High School. Fournier's teachers describe him as a respectful and smart student who was a standout athlete with a great sense of humor.
His family says they are shocked and devastated. Earl Fournier said his nephew was a special person, who made people feel happy. "I know that whenever I think of Nick it's going to make me nicer to people," said Fournier.
Police said this was Shawn Burritt's Fourth drunken driving charge.
They said he was driving with a suspended license and refused a breathilizer test.
He is facing a variety of criminal charges and will be arraigned Monday in Burlington.
They should yank licenses after your first or second shot! So sad yet preventable.
I child-proofed my house but they keep getting back in!
It seems they all drive on suspended licenses.
