CARACAS (Reuters) - A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realize something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.

"I woke up because the pain was unbearable," Camejo said, according to a report on Friday in leading local newspaper El Universal.

His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband's body only to find him moved into a corridor -- and alive.

Reuters could not immediately reach hospital officials to confirm the events. But Camejo showed the newspaper his facial scar and a document ordering the autopsy.

Oh My Gosh! That is too weird. Crazy that this is not the first time something like this has happened. I've read of people waking up at their own funerals or people finding caskets of the previously buried being scratched up because the person awoke after being buried. (I always wondered what would make someone dig them out in the 1st place?)

How does this happen? Do they not confirm that the person is in fact deceased before beginning an autopsy or, God forbid, burying them!?!

How can someone wake up at their funeral? Don't they get put into the fridge before that?

I think I read it too! Was it the one where the guy had been bitten by a poisonous snake that shut down part of his brain function so he was unable to make any sort of response as they were preparing to do an autopsy? I remember reading that story and being TERRIFIED that it could really happen.

He was probably alive but his life signals weren't picked up by the machines.

In the 1800's didn't they used to attach a bell to a string and put the string inside the coffin for this very reason, or am I remembering an old wives tale or something?
