Couey gets death penalty after raping/burying child alive

A repeat sex offender whose crimes against nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford led to new, tougher laws across the nation, was sentenced to death today in a Florida court. Circuit Judge Ric Howard spent almost an hour reminding John Evander Couey why he was being given the ultimate punishment by detailing the gruesome details of his crimes against the "girl in the pink hat."
Earlier this month, Judge Howard ruled against arguments from Couey's attorneys that he was mentally retarded and not eligible for the death penalty.

Couey was convicted of breaking into the home of Jessica's grandparents, where she lived with her father, abducting her from her bedroom, taking her to the mobile home where he lived, concealing her in a closet, raping her and finally burying her alive in trash bags in the backyard.

A jury convicted Couey in March of murder and kidnapping and recommended by a 10-2 vote the death penalty. Under Florida law, the final decision was left to the judge.

Members of Jessica's family were present for the sentencing, including Mark Lunsford who has campaigned across the United States for tougher laws to deal with convicted sex offenders.

After the sentencing hearing, Lunsford told reporters he had a message for Couey: "Skip all these appeals. Take your punishment."

*And great he lived in and committed his crime in a trailer..

...at least it was in the leading Crazy State Florida and not in Ohio...

Bury him alive...sounds like justice to me.
He told that precious little girl he was going to take her home. Told her that he had to put her in those bags so no one would see her. Then he dug a hole and buried her alive. She had a stuffed animal that her daddy had won her at the fair, and she was clutching that when they found her. She had torn through the bag trying to get out.
That is one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever heard. I am crying right now. I think he is one of the most evil, vile creatures that ever drew breath, and the faster that they can kill the son of a bitch the better.

I completely agree! There was a video of him shortly after he killed her, laughing, drinking and smoking like nothing happened.

Not surprised. Anyone who could do that to a child (hell, any human being) has no conscience...to this day, my child molesting step bastard can't figure out why I hate him, why I won't come to visit them...

And I'm almost positive that video was shot when everyone was looking for the little girl!! I hope the others prisoners beat him daily and make his life a living hell.

Yeah it was shot when the little girl was missing..it drove me insane how he referred to the child as "the girl with the pink hat".

I googled the video and couldn't find it. He was sitting in a bar in Augusta,Georgia smoking and drinking when a reporter from WAGT interviewed him about a smoking ban. This was 2 weeks after he killed Jessica. He was laughing and having a good old time. It was just a fluke encounter with the reporter. Three weeks after that interview he confessed to Jessica's murder.
