Default Detectives 'now believe Madeleine died by accident'

Portuguese detectives now favour the theory that Madeleine McCann died in a tragic accident in the family's holiday apartment, it has emerged.

The three senior officers leading the inquiry are all but certain she died on the night she vanished.
They are 'leaning towards' the conclusion that she was not intentionally killed, according to police sources. scroll down for more

Kate and Gerry McCann continue to hope Madeleine is alive

Kate and Gerry McCann continue to hope their little girl is alive, 112 days after she disappeared.

But the detectives leading the investigation, Guilhermino Encarnacao, Goncal Amaral and Luis Neves, are apparently agreed on the fatal accident theory.
A source close to the investigation said: "They are virtually certain that Madeleine died that night, and there are several hypotheses to explain how she died - was it murder or was it an accident?
"They are leaning towards the accident hypothesis as the strongest."
Police refused to explain what evidence they have to make them think the girl is dead.
Detectives have stressed several times that neither the McCanns, both 39-year-old doctors, nor the friends they were holidaying with are suspects.

One possibility is a botched burglary, in which thieves panicked and tried to silence Madeleine. But Mr McCann said: "This is wild speculation.
"The police have always said to us they are taking all possible scenarios into consideration. For us, nothing has changed in the last two weeks.
"There is a very real possibility Madeleine is alive and we want the police to look for her."
However, the consultant cardiologist conceded that the statistical chances of finding his daughter are slim.
He said: "We have done a lot of research into missing children and the percentage of minors who have ever reappeared is very small.
"Obviously a very long time has passed, but we will do everything we can to make sure Madeleine does not become a statistic."
The couple yesterday gave interviews to Spain's three top- selling newspapers.

Mr McCann told reporters: "The possibility that Madeleine is alive and in Spain is real. There is no border guard and no one closed the border the night Madeleine disappeared."
Police are still awaiting the results of forensic tests on blood samples found in the family's holiday apartment at the Mark Warner Ocean Club.
In the meantime, the McCanns are considering whether to return home to Rothley, Leicestershire, with their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie.
Yesterday they also launched the findings of research commissioned by the Find Madeleine campaign. The survey of MEPs found that 97 per cent would back a Europeanwide sex offenders' register.

Or could it have been and accident covered up by the parents with a kidnap story? I can't shake the feeling that they're hiding something.

Exactly.

Why should one girl get so much publicity when other people go missing all the time and get nothing?

They are just saying that to lull the parents into a false sense of security.

Once they have sufficient evidence the parents will be arrested.

Just my opinion from years of reading true crime and whodunnits.

Reminds me a little of the Jonbenet case.

LisaLucy - that's what I've been thinking since I first read the 'accidental' death. They were neglectful, she fell or had a sickness, died, and the McCanns cried 'bushy haired stranger' all the way to the news station.

"Obviously a very long time has passed, but we will do everything we can to make sure Madeleine does not become a statistic."

This guy just pisses me off. I don't think there are statistics for kids who are killed because their parents were too fucking cheap to get a baby-sitter, asshole!! You would be THE ONLY ONE!

I can't help thinking there is something well dodgy about all this; the parents the way they are acting just seems off!

I pray to God that this little girl is safe.

Sorry, but poor Madelaine is dead and was from the get go.
This whole story stinks and her parents know a LOT more than they are letting on and they are totally responsible for whatever happened to her.
This media grief fest they've been conducting for the last 3 months proves it.
This is yet another example of a 'baffling' crime which after due investigation reveals the obvious culprits. They did it, accidentally or deliberately, they did it.

My theory"

They left the kids home alone and went out to dinner 'nearby'. Madeline got sick and choked on her own vomit or something similar and died. Parents came home and found her and being doctors tried all kinds of CPR to revive her without success. Panic. Can't call anyone because they'd have to explain why the kid was home alone. So they concoct a ridiculous 'abduction' story and dispose of the body. They then embark on a huge media campaign to 'find Maddy' in order to gain public sympathy. Both behave like emotionless zombies througout - it's not grief and shock, it's GUILT.

I agree completely. Something is very off about the whole thing. I don't trust those parents, and believe they were involved in some way, indirectly or directly. I do think the parents are trying way too hard to seem "concerned" and "grieving" by doing so much media coverage. It all seems like an act, trying to cover up something.

And because it's a cute, blonde and blue-eyed little girl. Maybe it's just in my mind, but many cases seem to get a lot more attention when the victim, regardless of age, is considered attractive. ("Oh, what a tragedy she died, she was so pretty!") As if being attractive made their deaths all the more terrible. That's just my opinion!
