I actually watched the Spelling B on tv. It was interesting for me because many of the words were French and I could spell them. I spelled girolle and grognard correctly.

The very first kid up to spell was a piece of work. He asked the moderator to say the word about 10 times. Then he repeated it 10 times. He asked for the origin and use in a sentence 10 times. Then he had to spell it, which he got wrong. He made the winner in the video look like a Rhodes Scholar.

I am not a nerd. I swayre.

There were a few kids at the B that seemed to have some kind of anti-social disorder or whatever it's supposed to be called. It was much more than being at that awkward age.

The first kid, this kid and a couple of others that could barely step out of the Spelling B mode in order to answer real questions. What are your hobbies? Do you play an instrument? Your favorite subject?

"Uhh, umm, uhh, whuh"?

I'd bet the farm that kid has Aspergers. Ultra smart but zero social skills. Not allowing him to mix with other kids in school is compounding the problem x1000. This is EXACTLY the type of kid who should absolutely not be home schooled.

The journo's reaction is exactly what these kids are up against. People assume they are nerdy geeks (which they often are! LOL) and then proceed to mock their inability to interact in a 'normal' way.

The interviewer didn't have much to work with. I'm a journalist and when you get the monosyllabic answers, one right after another, it's tough. The kid, by the way, strikes me as completely borderline retarded. Strange kid.

Many kids who are genius level (I'm not saying this kid is) seem socially retarded. I know a fair share of really introverted computer nerds and they are always putting their feet in their mouth and seem to lack that social filter. They come across as really rude because they are just socially arrested.
I'm not talking about all smart people or nerdy types, but we all know these types of people I'm talking about.
