60 year old woman gives birth to twins
Mom at age 60: 'Age has been redefined'
The psychologist who gave birth to twin boys at age 60 said Thursday she was on a mission to let women know they have choices.
"It's really basically about women and empowerment," Frieda Birnbaum told NBC's "Today" show.
Birnbaum, who underwent in-vitro fertilization last year at a South African clinic that specializes in older women, gave birth by Caesarean section on Tuesday at Hackensack University Medical Center.
"I don't feel like I went through a lot of trauma during delivery or even through the process of being pregnant," Birnbaum said.
The hospital said she was the nation's oldest mother of twins.
"Age has been redefined," Birnbaum said.
She and her husband, Ken, a New York City attorney, have been married for 38 years and have three other children — sons ages 33 and 6 and a daughter, 29.
The couple wanted another child closer in age to their youngest son, and Birnbaum's husband said it was his idea for his wife to become pregnant instead of adopting.
"I couldn't be happier about the way it worked out," Ken Birnbaum told "Today."
Their daughter has said she worries about Birnbaum taking care of the twins when they're in their teens and she's in her late 70s — concerns dismissed by Birnbaum on Thursday.
"I hope I'm a role model for my daughter, that when she gets older that she can make her own decisions based on who she is rather than what society dictates," she said.
She said that people who consider new motherhood at her age inappropriate "need to get ready for what's coming up in our society."
The couple plan to take their sons home on Saturday.

She has given a few interviews and personally I think she is ridiculous. Her own daughter (aged 29) said flat out that she was NOT happy about this at all and still doesn't support her mother's decision.
This woman's other children will be raising these kids because she may possibly die before they even turn 18. And just because we are living longer doesn't mean we need to be having children at 60! If we were supposed to be having children that old then women all over the world would naturally get pregnant with their own eggs and without medically intervention in their 60's. She's an ignorant woman.
The avergage life expectancy in the United States for females is 79 years old. If she lives to be 79 her younger children will be 25 and 19. And who is to say that even if she does live to be 79 that she will be mentally and physically able to mother these children? She is selfish and her whole defense about "empowerment" is idiotic. My heart hurts for all of her children.
Oh and BTW I don't blame her daughter one bit! My mom is almost 50 and if she planned to get pregnant again I would be pissed. My mom has kids in their mid to late 20’s and she is going to be a grandma in 3 months so why the hell would she need more children. She had 2 more kids when she was 35 and 38 and she is too tired to really do much with them and they haven’t even hit their teens yet. I can’t imagine her with a newborn.
Maybe I am just a snob, but I am still an advocate for having children in your 20’s and 30’s when you are still in your prime.

I really hate this idea! She is leaving them to a long Motherless life without caring for anything but her own selfish life. Her poor daughter! Good grief!

From what I heard the daughter is actually kind of upset. I would be too, seeing as how she could end up having to raise them or be a parental figure in their early adulthood.

For crying out freaking loud. This is just really irresponsible and rubs me the wrong way. And she literally comes out and says she did this to make a point?! Always a good reason to get pregnant.

There is a reason women of that age cant have children.
I could see her wanting a kid if she didnt have any,but she has 3 already ,for God,s sake
I had my last 38yo and i felt it was wrong
I ve tried hard to not let my baby feel her mom could not be like the young ones of her age group.
I am that idiot,s age and i dont want to be around babies anymore.
She must have severe age issues, trying to prove herself as a young mom, somehow.
Reality will hit her when she goes pick up her kids from school leaning on a cane, the stupid bitch.

I wouldn't choose this, but I'm certainly not going to tell her she's wrong for wanting more children. Jeez people./

I really have no problem with it - it's her body and her life. As long as she and her husband provide for those boys (and the older one who is 6 yrs. old) then what's the hassle? I think it's weird, but I can understand why she did it. Hell, babies have been worse into far worse circumstances than this one.
People snicker and talk out the side of their mouths about old rich geezers spawning progeny to "grace" (actually litter) the planet with their genes, why shouldn't this woman - who isn't rich - have the same opportunity?

I don't ever see me growing tired of babies. But at that age I think I would prefer the ones I can give back.
I plan on being a wild boozed-up grandma

I have no problem either, its her life and body after all.
I am just thinking if what she did was natural and normal she wouldnt make headlines and we wouldnt be gossiping about her
Going against nature cant be good ,in the long run,me thinks
