Default 'Can't any f***ing women in this f***ing hospital have babies naturally nowadays?'

NHS worker under investigation for 'natural birth' rant at Caesarean mum

When Samantha Smart went into labour she was determined to have the same natural delivery she had experienced with her first two children.

So after three draining days waiting to give birth she was exhausted - but disappointed when doctors announced she would need a Caesarean. Scroll down for more...
The anaesthetist's assistant allegedly told Samantha Smart, 23, 'Can't any f***ing woman in this f***ing hospital have babies naturally nowadays?'

Her disappointment, however, was nothing compared with the extraordinary rage of one member of the medical team.
Told of the change of plan the man, who was assisting the anaesthetist, let fly with a foul four-letter torrent that made clear his disgust at the decision to resort to surgery instead of a natural birth.

To the horror of Miss Smart and her partner Tony Shepherd, the man said: 'Can't any f***ing women in this f***ing hospital have babies naturally nowadays?'

Not surprisingly his outburst reduced the mother-of-three to tears and has left her feeling distraught about the circumstances of the birth of son Luke.

The mother, 23, said: "I still can't believe that he treated me so cruelly and said such horrible things to me.

"Hearing this made me feel worthless. I was really, really shocked and I felt useless because I wasn't able to give birth naturally like I had done with my first two children."
Already despairing at the length of time since her waters had broken, Miss Smart turned to her partner and said: "I told you I was a failure".

The ordeal unfolded at Newham General Hospital, in East London in February.
Miss Smart, of Canning Town, went in to labour in the early hours of Sunday, February 18.

After phoning the hospital she was advised to go in and set off hoping to experience the straightforward delivery she had with her first two children, Shannon, six, and Leigh, three.

The couple arrived at the hospital at 12.50am where they sat in the waiting room for three hours.

"I thought I was going to have the baby in the waiting room if I wasn't seen to quickly," Miss Smart said.
"But then as I lay in the maternity unit, I was in labour but Luke just wouldn't come.

"The doctors were not keen to induce the birth, so for the next three days I drifted in and out of labour. I barely slept and Tony had to sleep on the floor because he did not want to miss the birth."

By the early hours of Wednesday Miss Smart was still in labour and beginning to despair when doctors agreed to carry out a Caesarean, which was when the operating department assistant, who has not been named, let fly.

"He said 'Can't any f****** women in this hospital give birth naturally these days?'," said Miss Smart.

"Here I was lying in my hospital bed and in a lot of pain and a professional who was supposed to treat me with respect was swearing at me.

"I had been trying to give birth for three days. I was exhausted. This was the last thing I expected from a qualified member of the maternity team.
"He should never be allowed to treat women who are in such a vulnerable position again."

So, what is the going rate in England for making someone cry and having them feel like a failure? A couple thousand? A million?

Yeah, the doc is an asshole and I DESPISE physicians who act like that, especially in the presence of a patient. He should be disciplined. I don't know if people are as lawsuit happy over there as they are over here, though.

What an outrage! As one who labored 72 hours, I can assure you that woman was at her very lowest already. That total jerk! He does not need to be near patients of any kind! I would really like to slap him up side the head. The total exhaustion you are already feeling at the end of a long labor is beyond explaination-you are reduced to helplessness and need supportive people around you badly!

Miss? Obviously not married to any of the fathers and with three kids by 23? Obviously another great role model..

That being said no one deserves that type of outburst by someone in the health care profession while in the middle of labor.

I do hope she keeps her legs closed now.

so she couldnt give birth 'naturally'. BFD. the baby is healthy isnt it? the tech was wrong and should be disciplined, i totally agree with that.... and she should do an investigation into birth control and maybe marriage. oh, wait, why should her 'partner' marry her? why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free

Was this guy a nurse? I would have told him to get the H out of the room.

No, he was the anithatist's assistant

"Told of the change of plan the man, who was assisting the anaesthetist, let fly with a foul four-letter torrent that made clear his disgust at the decision to resort to surgery instead of a natural birth."

A couple of things to note here
1) he was male & will never know the pain of childbirth (but will know the pain of castration if someone is given the oppotunity)
2) as an Assistant what position is he in to know whether the baby is in distress or not & therefore it is not for him to comment.

I did do a double take when I looked to see how old she was for the first child....

However, there is more to this report...

"He should never be allowed to treat women who are in such a vulnerable position again."
Mr Shepherd, 26, and another friend who had attended for the birth, were astonished by the outburst.
He said: "After Sam had been trying to give birth naturally for so long, I thought it was out of order for the assistant to speak to her like that.
"Everybody heard it. I would have complained straight away, but I did not want to get into a row and miss the birth."
He said two doctors and a midwife who were in the room were also shocked, and the couple had later learned that staff had complained.
"He just wanted to get home and he was in a bad mood because Sam was having a tricky labour and would have to wait around," said Mr Shepherd.
"People shouldn't go into such a caring profession if they want to get home on time."
Within the space of two hours, Miss Smart's contractions increased dramatically and she was finally able to give birth naturally.
On February 21st at 5.28am, she gave birth to Luke, who weighted 5lbs 3oz.
The couple have complained to the Patient Advisory Liaison Services and the head of midwifery at the hospital.
But they are still waiting to hear what action is being taken to discipline the anaesthetists assistant and the healthcare agency he works for.
A spokesman for Newham University Hospital NHS Trust, said that as a result of the incident the man, who was employed by an agency, no longer worked at the trust.
"This prompt action reflects the seriousness with which the Trust takes its obligations to its patients, and visitors. This sort of behaviour, however rare, is unacceptable," she said.
She added that the issues raised were being investigated under the NHS Complaints Procedure.

My pleasure Hon!
I was brought up around medics & know that they can be high-handed but I have to admit that I was shocked by this.... Its usually the anithitist, not his assistant (j/k)

The man was clearly out of order, but why would anyone think they were a failure because of his nasty tirade? Sounds to me like she has serious self-esteem issues in the first place. And yes, maybe slowing down on having babies for a while would be a good thing too.

I think too many women DO have C-sections for either convenience or aesthetics BUT if it's a medical emergency (as in this case) then of course she should have had one and the docs should STFU.

Having said that I know a woman who conceived via IVF and then required an emergency C-Section so she decided to breastfeed for nearly 5 years "because it's the only thing I could do naturally" Purleeze.

Oh you get a metric ton of shit from people if you have a C-section.
I was even told that " how sad you didn't have myyyy birth experience" because I didn't squat in a field while hippies beat drums. I have a hip problem.

Dude I was high as a kite and there was a Law and Order Marathon on...that's a great fucking experience any way you slice it.

Oh, purleaze.

Yeah, the assistant guy was a douche, but this is so drama qeen-ish. She might as well have just skipped all this and asked for reassurance.

I had two C-sections and felt really betrayed by my body (kids wanted to come out head first, my uterus is tipped, blah blah blah) anyway, it reminds me of that nurse down the hall saying Aw, shaddup when some poor woman in labor was screaming yet again...made me feel like I was supposed to be Katie Holmes or something with her "silent" birth

And excuse me mofo would you like to have my baby FOR me, HUH? Starting 25 years ago it became a phenomenon in our culture that more women than not have to be cut open. Because we don't frickin squat in fields and keep working like we used to.
