Gay fairy tales for primary school children
A new scheme promoting alternative lifestyles through fairytales aimed a primary-aged children has been criticised by Christian activists.
So far fourteen schools and one local authority are taking part in the No Outsiders programme. It has secured funding of £600,000 from the Economic and Social Research Council.
The scheme is run by Sunderland and Exeter universities and the Institute of Education (IoE) in London.
If successful it is hoped to extend it nationwide.
One of the fairy stories features a prince who turns down three princesses before falling in love with a man.
Others feature two male penguins raising a chick (That is cute!) and a girl with two space-travelling mothers.
The push to include books for primary-aged children that encompass same-sex relationships has angered religious groups and re-ignited the debate about Section 28.
Booksellers Waterstones are considering introducing titles like King and King into their stores if the scheme goes nationwide.
It is hoped that teaching children as young as five about the existence of gay relationships might help in tackling the use of words like gay to mean bad or inferior

I just can't understand anymore why people are even remotely shocked about these things. What year are we living in?

thx for posting this honey!
i think it's a great idea..they can teach both gay and straight fairy tales and then kids of all different orientations can identify with different stories...no-one will feel left out, so to speak..
i am straight but i am an ethnic minority...when i was a kid, (i am 32 now), anyways when i was a kid like 4, 5 years old, all the fairy tales had only white people in them..i am not white and that was weird...now they have animated movies and stories that are ethnically diverse and i think it's a really good thing..
and i think they should start with gay and straight fairy tales too, it will help alln kinds of kids understand themselves, and their parents and society and whatnot..

It's a good idea. I wonder if they would catch on though. The fairy stories that I remember, that I know and was told were largely the same ones my parents and even grandparents were taught so its going to be a long time before they become as commonplace as those. I do think its a good idea though.
I remember a book called 'What's wrong with bottoms?' that was in my primary school, when I was aged 3-10. It freaked me out! It was all about child abuse and was written for children, teaching them what to do if someone tried to abuse them. I swear, I was not ready for that book. It terrified me and made me really wary of my male teachers!!!

I think this is a good idea. My son had his friend over a while back who is 9 and I heard him calling my son gay and homo etc... so I called him in the other room and told him I didn't use those words in my home. Then a few weeks ago my son's dad came to pick him up and Sean(my son) said something and his dad said son that sounded so Gay and he knows how I feel about this it royally pissed me off. I live in the south and homophobia and racism are both wide spread and I try to teach my children that such ignorance is unexcusible but it's really hard when they hear it from everyone else. I think these books are a good step forward.

Yes good point about the ethnic diversity issue...it's good that kids realise how we are all different and it's a positive thing
And I think it's news mainly because of section 28 which says something along the lines of "Homosexuality should not be promoted." Don't quote me on that though!

I think it's a great initiative. And of course it's going to be fairytales, it's a pretty basic and effective way for kids to learn about homosexuality, and tolerance in general.
