Officer killed by man he saved 3 years ago

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The city of Manchester has prepared to lay a slain police officer to rest on Thursday.
As the details of the tribute are finalized, WMUR News has learned new information about Michael Briggs and the kind of officer he was.
One story was about the day that Briggs helped the very man that is now facing capital murder charges for Briggs' death was shot himself and in need of medical help.
It was an act of violence that brought officer Michael Briggs and Michael Addison together three years ago, but the circumstances were very different from the tragedy that took place earlier this week.
In March of 2003, Manchester police were called to a report of a gunshot at 106 Pearl Street.
The first officer on the scene was Briggs. He located the victim inside the apartment suffering from a bullet wound through his collarbone and started to render first aid.
That victim was Michael Addison.
"I guess you could say it's ironic that in Michael Addison's time of need it was Michael Briggs who responded and took steps to, in fact, save Michael Addison’s life. It’s a very sad thing," said Manchester Sgt. Nick Willard.
On Monday morning, police said Addison drew a silver and black handgun near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Lincoln Street and shot Briggs once in the head.
The policeman who, three years ago, tried to stop the bleeding in Addison's shoulder and called for an ambulance was now lying in his own pool of blood.
Briggs died about a day and a half later. Addison is now charged with capital murder.
"I think treating Michael Addison for a gunshot wound back in 2003 is a testament to what Michael has done since the day he became a police officer. Indiscriminately helping others," said Willard.
Thomas Williams was arrested for shooting Addison and is currently in jail.
Of the 190-plus officers on the Manchester police force, it was Briggs who crossed paths with Addison in 2003, tending to someone he didn't know who simply needed his help.
"His actions that night (are) a testament to his courage. We at the Manchester Police Department are proud of his actions not only on that night but every night he went to work," said Willard.
A wake for Briggs will be held Friday with funeral services on Saturday.
