Woman says she was unaware she was Pregnant until it was time to deliver

MAPLE VALLEY, Wash. – A Maple Valley woman says she was completely unaware she was pregnant until it was time to deliver.

She calls it "the shortest pregnancy on record" – lasting a whole 36 hours.

It seems impossible, but it happens.

Amanda Brisendine didn't know she was pregnant.
She said she had no idea she was pregnant until doctors told her 36 hours before she gave birth.

"I had nothing. No preparation at all. We were talking about names on the operating table," she said.

Amanda isn't completely clueless about childbirth. She has a 14-month-old daughter. But she says this pregnancy provided none of the standard symptoms.

"I had normal periods, no morning sickness. I was working right up until Thursday," she said.

The question everyone is asking is: How can a woman be 9 months along and not know she's pregnant?

Doctors here say it's more common than you might think.

"It's not a rare event. We probably see it even at our local hospital every couple years," said Dr. Jim Haines, Overlake Medical Center.

Doctors believe Amanda was fooled by pre-existing problems with her ovaries that produce irregular menstrual cycles.

She says she never felt the baby kick and she had no cravings. She did gain some weight.

"I quit smoking, so I thought that's why, and my grandma likes to use a lot of butter and sugar in her cooking, so I blamed her too," said Amanda.

Ironically, Amanda was worried she might not be able to have another baby because of those ovary problems.

Amanda said she wanted to go public with her story so others in the same situation won't feel embarrassed

I know it seems impossible, but it DOES happen. Sometimes these lumpen morons don't know they're preggo until the baby actually pops out. It's mostly sheer ignorance ("oh yeah, I guess I did miss a few periods and I put those funny movements down to gas") and also a state of deep denial because they are usually young women who face dire consequences if their pregnancy is discovered or who simply don't know what to do about it.

I would just like to know what kind of life style she was living as her normal self but being pregnant, you know like if there was booze or drugs or multiple partners while being preggers..... all very risky!! I knew a girl and it happened exactly like that. Right before she gave birth I saw her, and you could tell something was going on with her face, she had like these like fat chimpmuck looking cheeks.

She was out partying right before the birth happened, as nothing had ever phased her. I heard that when they took her to the emergency room because of her feeling ill, and the doctor did a pap smear, Doctor said, "oh, there's the head".
Isn't it horrible? Complete denial.

OMG. I hate these people! How come it's the little people like me that have to go through a LOOOONG pregnancy and then give birth to a kid the size of a 10 pound bowling ball! Everyone close to 10 pounds and I am not even average size! Must be nice. Although, I think I might miss that kick in the vagina at 1 am. Well, maybe not that kick but some of the others.

Kind of OT, but on Oprah today is a girl (woman now) who was charged with killing her baby after he was born. She did know she was pregnant, but no one around her did other than her boyfriend-who used to STAND ON HER STOMACH TO TRY AND MAKE IT GO DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!
She is serving 6 years I think...not sure what the boyfriend got. He actually disposed of the body...
