Angry Mother, 3 children killed in Ohio house fire

Mother, 3 children killed in Ohio house fire
Six escape blaze most likely caused by heater or electrical malfunction

Updated: 10:37 a.m. ET Oct 27, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Fire swept through a two-story frame house early Friday, killing a woman and her three young children, but six other people managed to escape, a fire official said.

Two firefighters were treated for burns. The identities of the 18-year-old mother and her children were not immediately released.

The youngest child was 2 weeks old and the others were 1 and 2 years old, said Doug Smith, a battalion chief for the Columbus fire department.

“They were all in one room upstairs on the second floor,” Smith said. “This is one of our nightmares here is to come on the scene and have this many people trapped.”

Authorities believe the fire was accidental, and possibly caused by a space heater or electrical malfunction, Smith said.

Ten people were inside when the fire started around 5:30 a.m. and six escaped on their own, Smith said. They tried to rush back inside to try to save the others, but firefighters stopped them, he said.

“We sent firefighters in to do the best they could,” Smith said.

Two firefighters were injured and taken to Ohio State University Medical Center, Smith said. One, burned on the face, was treated and released, and the other, with burns on the back, was being evaluated, a hospital spokesman said.

The exterior of the century-old, two-story home was still standing, but everything visible through a broken window was charred, and the home’s white siding was blackened where flames came through the windows.

And the endless cycle of poverty, neglect, and ignorance in Ohio continues. This was about 2 miles from my house. Ten people in one house? an 18 year old girl with 3 kids? The fire was caused by a bad extension cord for the heater they were using since they could not afford the gas to heat one of these old 100 year old rental houses(with no insulation and built of all wood they are deathtraps).

It is tragic, but I can't help to think about the 18 year old with 3 kids...1, 2 and 2 weeks...
Who were the others in the home, Soj? Were they family?

Yes stupid extended retard inbred extended family. 11 people living in that house but they could not afford to get the fucking gas turned on? This particular neighborhood(the same slum I was in today helping with a move) always has multiple fire deaths in houses every year. Space heaters almost every time.

the housesare so old, drafty and uninsulated that the heating bills for gas would be up to $300 or $400 a month..so they use space heaters instead, which inevitably explode(kerosene), tip over (electric), overheat extension cords, etc. Raging fires with multiple deaths happen every year in this neighborhood..and nothing seems to be done about it. And of course there are smoke detectors-with dead or removed batteries.

This particular neighborhood has more fire deaths by far than any other in the city. And the worst part is that most of the victims are of course the innocent little kids. Christ the one kid was a two week old baby.

*The father of the 18 year old mother ...who was also living in the house and is about my age(early forties) has EIGHT KIDS AND 16 GRANDKIDS!!!*

*One last tidbit. The name of the two week old infant killed: Nevaeh Hanners-HEAVEN spelled backwards!!! AAARRGGG!!!*

No doubt they had some type of government assistance...with 11 people you think they could have pooled their resources and gotten the propane-natural gas, whatever it is. If 11 people live in one household and they can't manage to heat the place-something is wrong. They are either living off the government and not working and using every penny of that, or what they do make is being used for drugs.
I know that is making a wide generalization, but if you think about it-11 people should be able to make enough to live on...

This type of tragedy occurs frequently once the weather turns cold.
Too many people don’t realize that it’s dangerous to use space heaters as
a main heat source. How sad.
