Quote:
BREAKING NEWS: Police Surround One-Room Amish Schoolhouse

WGAL-TV
12:27 p.m. EDT October 2, 2006

Police have responded to reports of a hostage situation and multiple people shot in eastern Lancaster County at a small, one-room Amish schoolhouse. PICTURES: Scene
The scene is along the 4800 block of Mine Road in Bart Township. Witnesses told News 8 reporter Anne Shannon that a man went into school and took hostages. Some people in the Amish community learned about the situation and contacted police. Witnesses told Shannon that this is tragedy not ever seen before in Lancaster County. Shannon also said that the hostage situation is over. Officials said the hostage taker is deceased.
Witnesses also told Shannon that this is tragedy not ever seen before in Lancaster County.
"This is definitely an enormous scene," Shannon said.
Lancaster General Hospital has called in all available personnel. They have been told to be prepared for a large number of patients.
John Lines of Lancaster General Hospital said so far they have received three "pediatric" patients. He did not say what their injuries were.
Hershey Medical Center in Dauphin County has also been warned that they might be receiving patients.
News 8 is stressing that the situation does not involve the Faith Mennonite School or Bart-Colerain Elementary, which are near the scene.

I guess the shooter has been killed, but not before he apparently killed a "number of people".

I have family from that area (none school age thank god)...and it's a nice place (Bucks County). Very nice homes, sprinkled in w/the Amish horse and buggies. That's really sad. I just wish this school violence would end. I don't get it...I really don't.

OK, so how did the Amish contact the police without a phone?

Sadly it just seems like a broken record doesn't it? Just heard two las vegas schools were shut down due to gun threats. Sigh...

I think it might be 5 people he killed, and then the police killed him, I believe. I haven't seen anything yet on who the guy was or what his problem was.

My dad lives in Lancaster County and I grew up in the neighbooring county, Chester County, and the amish there are really very nice. That whole thing is such a sad shame because those schools teach children age 5-17 (if I remember correctly). Because of how large the amish community is there, so many people have day to day dealings with them and I can promise you that there will be an outpouring of sympathy from the surrounding communities, amish or not.

By the way, they don't live in the middle of nowhere and they DO know how to use the phone. Someone proably went to a gas station or grocery store and called for help.

Dear fuckers with issues,
I don't really care. Seriously, I don't. Stop taking out your issues on little kids, and innocent bystanders. You were abused, so were a lot of us, that is why there are mental health professionals. How IS killing a child going to solve your problems? Really. If you are going to take a gun to anyone take it to yourself.
I hope they mutilate your corpse

Signed

Apparently 4 dead, including the milkman hostage-taker, 7 injured, three of them critically. Very sad and very scary. Home schooling starts to look more and more attractive all the time.

Dear Government:

This is what you get without gun control laws. Please accept these dead bodies we have dumped on your doorsteps.

Thanks,

Citizens.

It is really sickening. Another day, another bombing in Iraq- Another day, another school massacre in the US. We really do not to do something about why so many nuts can get guns.

I know the right to bear arms is a constitutional right (from the 18th century, time to move on?) but really, would the fabric of American society break down if Joe Schmoe (not forgetting the nutters and crims) wasn't allowed to have a gun? Would the world stop revolving if people had to give up that 'right'? The system seems to work pretty well out here in The Rest Of The World. I've never lived in a country with no gun control so perhaps my view is biased, but I have a real problem with the morality of making weapons whose sole purpose is to kill people available to the general population. I know the gun fans say "it's not the gun, it's the shooter" and that's true, but if the potential shooters didn't have access to the guns in the first place it becomes a moot point.
