Jogger Attacked By Pit Bulls
Jogger Attacked By Pit Bulls
Prosecutor: Owner Wasn't Supposed To Have Any Dogs
POSTED: 5:52 pm EDT September 28, 2006
UPDATED: 6:50 pm EDT September 28, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A jogger was attacked by pit bulls in a north Columbus neighborhood, and officials said it's not the first time the dogs' owner has gotten in trouble because of her animals.
Problematic pit bulls and their owners have become a growing problem for city officials, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.
"Our streets are not a wildlife preserve. When you jog the streets of Columbus, you have a right not to be attacked by any animals," said assistant city prosecutor Bill Hedrick.
A few weeks ago, Robert Wallace said he was jogging near Hamilton Avenue when two pit bulls approached and attacked him, biting his leg as he tried to escape.
"I jumped up on a car. I tried to scream for the people in the house," Wallace said.
The prosecutor said that Barbara Robinson, the resident and owner of the dogs, was inside but allegedly didn't come out until police arrived and drew their weapons on the animals.
"That's when I realized how dangerous of a situation it actually was," Wallace said.
Robinson was not at home when NBC 4 tried to reach her for comment. She now faces four charges of animals at large and failing to confine vicious dogs.
But officials said they are concerned that Robinson had three prior convictions for the same offense. In June 2003, a judge even ruled that Robinson was no longer allowed to keep dogs.
"That's the first time I really got angry about the situation," Wallace said. "What if that was a kid turning that corner?"
"This is an ongoing, problem and it's time to say enough is enough. We'll do what we can to put a stop to it at this point, before someone is even more seriously hurt," Hedrick said

"That's the first time I really got angry about the situation," Wallace said. "What if that was a kid turning that corner?"OK, I've gotta say it. Why do people always use the "what if it was a kid" angle? As if it's not tragic enough in it's own right for an adult to suffer or be killed needlessly. He's mauled and dead, yeah, but at least he's not a kid. I believe we as a society need to protect the vulnerable and that includes kids, elderly, and animals as well as mentally retarded or otherwise incapacitated individuals. It's actually more of a loss for society to lose a productive functioning adult.

I think he may have said it because kids are physically smaller and are less capable of defending themselves or escaping than an adult. This guy was able to get up on top of a car and escape the attack...a child may not have been able to do so. Anyway the whole situation was avoidable as the woman was not even supposed to have any dogs. I hope they throw the book at her.

Dogs are my worst fear while I'm out jogging. I think I'm going to get some mace to carry, just in case (will that work on dogs - I don't want to actually hurt them, but I sure as hell don't want to get bit either).
Off topic -
Soj, I miss gazing at Colin....

You know..that is a good question..what WOULD work against dogs in an attack like this? Mace? Pepper Spray? something else? I wonder how we can find that out.(something that would work against both dogs and humans would be ideal)
oh ok I will bring back Colin..I had gotten tired of him but I guess I can bring him back!

Tired of him?! You!? I'm gobsmacked! Well, it doesn't have to be Colin, but you have always been reliable for good eye-candy. We've come to expect it.

I guess the same thing that will stop humans will stop dogs too. I would get the strongest possible spray to use against human and non-human predators!

Check out the legality of pepper spray in your area first. It varies widely! If it isn't legal, you may have to weigh the risks of illegally carrying it versus some other method of protection.

I'd like to believe that but that line gets stated anytime something bad happens. It's like people pull out the kid card when they think something is supposed to be taken more seriously than it is. One of my older friends was outraged when one of his pals was driving drunk and hit a car really hard that had 3 passengers: a one month old and 2 young women ages 19 and 22. All he had to say about it was, "He could have killed a baby!" Yeah, fuck the other two, who cares about them.
And, if it's a case of being concerned because kids are more vulnerable, why doesn't anybody ever say, "What if it'd been an elderly lady?" or "what if it had been someone in a wheelchair?"?

I think it might be because women and children are generally regarded as needing to be protected. You know like say if a large number of ppl were to escape from a burning building or something, it's usually women and children first oh and the eldery and the disabled I think?

I really think in this case he was not meaning it that way. It sounds to me that given that he could not fight them off, and ahd to climb onto a car to get away from them, that he was more concerned about a child not being able to get away like he did. Also children are out and about on the streets alot playing. I know in my neighborhood I am much more likely to see a kid on a bike come around a corner than an elderly lady or a disabled person. I think in this case he was just being realistic and made a valid point.

Mace should probably be about 10 times as effective on dogs as it is on humans.. dogs have a sense of smell that is about 1000 times what we pick up. If mace will knock a human over, it'll probably kill the dog lol
