Youths' Art To Appear On Condom Packages

(CBS) LOS ANGELES The artwork of five Los Angeles-area youths has been selected to be included on condom packages to be given away at family planning clinics, the California Family Health Council announced Wednesday.

The organization, formed by the 1997 merger of the Los Angeles Regional Family Planning Council and the California Family Planning Council, sponsored the contest to raise awareness about sexually transmitted diseases.

"Condoms can help reduce exposure to sexually transmitted disease and we hope these condom artwork covers will encourage those who have chosen to be sexually active to use them," said Margie Fites Seigle, the president of CFHC.

The winners from the Southland are:

Angel Aguilar, 22, Maywood

Jimmy Canchola, 16, Pomona

Judy Huang, 17, Los Angeles

Remy Wong, 18, Los Angeles

Danying Wu, 17, Los Angeles


Every year, about 19 million new STD infections are reported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About half of those infections are among people ages 15 to 24.

Chlamydia is the most common STD, with more than 130,000 cases reported in California last year.
