COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- There are probably safer hidings spots, but perhaps that didn't dawn on a man found with a bomb in his pants.
A sheriff’s deputy made the unusual discovery during a traffic stop in Cottage Grove Tuesday morning, said Sgt. Clint Riley with the Lane County Sheriff's Office.
The deputy found the explosive device while searching suspect Nathan Hirst, 31. It was located in his pants pocket.
The device was about five inches long, wrapped in duct tape and had a fuse attached, Riley said.
Hirst was arrested at a gas station in Cottage Grove. Authorities secured the station with crime tape while waiting for a bomb team to arrive.
No one was injured.
Hirst was wanted on an outstanding warrant for a probation violation involving unauthorized possession of a controlled substance. He now faces an additional charge -- possession of a destructive device.
