I just turned on CNN to watch The Seventies documentaries. CNN says they'll be staying with this story for hours to come. For those here who remember.."Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead".

Just let 2016 take Charles Manson.

I bet they are. There are a lot of old Cuban ex-pats who were wondering if they would ever outlive this guy.

love him or hate him, he was one of the most important political figures of the second half of the 20th century. i don't love him or hate him, and i think cuba's future is neither with the old fossils still clinging to the 1959 revolution, nor the ultra-right miami cubans and their cold war mentality and old grievances. i hope cubans are given a chance to write their own future, preserving the best of the revolution (public healthcare and education systems that surpass those of the majority of the richer and democratic latin american countries; mostly getting rid of the rigid caste-like class system that plagues the rest of latin america) and getting rid of the repression and censorship, and adopting the best of capitalism and democracy.
when it comes to exporting his ideals though, he did better in africa than in latin america. in south africa he played a key role in ending apartheid and is loved almost as much as mandela. but in latin america, he fostered the chavezes and the ortegas and their bullshit autocratic populism.

I get what you are saying especially the healthcare/education, which have always impressed me. But I feel like calling them fossils clinging to the revolution and old grievances, it dismisses the suffering that so many people went through, or saw their families go through. I totally sympathize with those people, that pain is all they see, however it may blind them to objectivity; I don't expect them to let it go. It didn't happen to me or my family, but if it had, I'm sure I'd be dancing in the streets too.
