Girl Scouts Turn Down $100K After Donor Demands Trans Discrimination

In May, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America announced that their organization is officially open to transgender girls. Soon after, the Girl Scouts of Western Washington received a large donation of $100,000 with this caveat: “Please guarantee that our gift will not be used to support transgender girls. If you can’t, please return the money.”

With a heavy heart, council CEO Megan Ferland sent the money back to the donor. “Girl Scouts is for every girl,” she told Seattle Met. “And every girl should have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout if she wants to.”
Ferland has kept the donor’s name private, but says that a donation that large could have been used to send 500 disadvantaged Girl Scouts to summer camp. To make up for the loss, the Girl Scouts of Western Washington have launched an Indiegogo fundraiser, stating, “$100,000 is a lot of money. In fact, it’s almost a third of our entire financial assistance program for this year—and girls need this support now. That’s why losing the gift is such a big deal.”

    The statement continues:

Our vision at Girl Scouts of Western Washington is that EVERY girl in our region — regardless of her race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity or geographic location — is empowered to unleash her potential, build her future and transform her world.

Through fundraising, the Girl Scouts of Western Washington seek to raise back the full $100,000. “Your donation to our #ForEVERYGirl Campaign will go to our financial assistance program and be awarded directly to girls who qualify for the federal free-and-reduced-price meal program at their schools and whose families request help to cover the costs of participating in Girl Scouts,” they write.
You can find more information on their Indiegogo page.

Good. Girl Scouts seems kind of lame to me, though, and their cardboard cookies are shite.

their cookies are drek, but they do a lot of activities to foster community and friendships. i wasn't a girl scout as a kid, but i am seeing what our local chapter does. they really try to coach girls in positive ways.

very cool that they turned down the donation.

Hate the chocolate mint ones though.

I wonder if it's true (the original donation), because if not, then that's a genius fundraising tactic.

Those girls sell $800 million dollars of cookies/year to fund their own projects. Every single female astronaut was a Girl Scout. About 90% of all women in Congress have been scouts. We have 9 girls who continue to amaze me with their service projects, problem solving and growing confidence. Girl Scouts was never my thing as a kid and I never imagined being involved as an adult but it's been a true gift. Admittedly, the cookies aren't great but they allow the girls to do fantastic things.

All that said, GS tends to be very progressive and they can market themselves well. Part of me wonders if this was truly a stipulation to the donation.

I'm probably just bitter because only the weird budget version of Girl Scouts was available to me when I was a kid....I was a "Bluebird" and then a "Camp Fire Girl." Lol.

    Those are cool.

I was a Brownie and then a Junior in girl scouts. Our badges weren't as cool looking as those beads.

My first thought was that this is a publicity stunt.

It also sounds fishy to me. I want to see proof of that offer.

Last week's This American Life had a story on Girl Guides (name for Girl Scouts outside the US) in China during WW2. It is absolutely fascinating listening - here's a link if you're interested.

Captain's Log | This American Life

I was a Girl Scout for years and had some great times at camp. It's a really terrific organization, imo, and if I had a daughter I would highly encourage her to get involved. I would also buy allthethinmints.

Why? They have been fairly heavily in the news bc of Jenner and their inclusive policy. It's not a stretch that some moron would try to entice a change of policy with a large gift. Even if it is a stunt, who cares? It's working and they're raising money.
