Why this photo of two women hugging is outraging commenters

Nelson Felippe/Facebook The photo of the women hugging that went viral.

A picture of two women embracing in a Brazilian subway station is going viral after a commenter expressed his outrage for a rather different reason than you might expect.

Nelson Felippe, who according to his Facebook profile works at Google and lives in Rio de Janeiro, posted the following post on Tuesday evening. It shows two young women, standing on the platform, in a casual hug. But, it's the comment that went viral.

Roughly translated from Portuguese, it reads:

"I am not prejudiced, I think everyone does what they want in your life. But, I find it absurd that I have to witness a scene like this. What you do in private is your decision, but what you do in public concerns me, and I refuse to see a scene like this and consider it normal."

Are you rolling your eyes yet? Keep reading. He then goes on to say: "Worst of all is the example they set for the children. What will happen to a kid that sees this? He'll think it's totally normal to wait for the train on the wrong side of the safety line."

It seems his message about the importance of subway safety really hit a nerve. The post has been liked and shared by thousands of people, at first in Brazil and now around the world.

After all, a speeding train could kill you. Two women hugging each other? Not so much.

This. The whole article is one of those internet click bait traps, i.e "this kid has explosive diarrhoea. What his mom did next will blow your mind". No thanks

I read about this elsewhere, and apparently the person who posted the pic and comment meant it to be a satire of anti-gay sentiments; you think he's referring to the couple hugging, and in the end, his comments are about something else...

Yeah, that's exactly what it is. My point was it completely fails at successful satire as that isn't even the safety line they are crossing. Instead of an enlightened comedian, it's just a douchebag with a keyboard.

He was talking about the guy, centre left and closest to the track, who was beyond the safety line, lol. I found it funny but then I'm easily amused.

Well, on top of all that, because it's Brazil and not the chilly, homophobic, prudish USA, those two women may not even be lovers at all.

He's not crossed the safety line still! Having one foot expectantly on the line does not make for a terrible sucking off tragedy.

My sister and I hug occasionally like this in public, even hold hands while walking. We're not gay not even happy.
