Red face Texas school district bans cleavage

(CBS) ARLINGTON, Texas With a new school year about to begin, some female students in one Texas school district may have to rethink their wardrobes.

Teen fashions often leave parents a little disgruntled. Arlington Independent School District parent Frances Henson said, “I'm thinking that our daughters are growing up a little bit too fast these days.”

Arlington School Board members agree with parents and this summer, they adopted an unusual amendment to the student dress code.

The new dress code reads, in part, “The display of cleavage is unacceptable. Low cut blouses, tops, sweaters, etc. with plunging necklines are not allowed."

“It's gotten bad enough that, unfortunately, our young males are looking at more than their English book, their speech book, their science book,” says school board president Sherri Wade. “And it's kind of nice to have something left to the imagination.”

Even some teenagers agree there is a problem. “I think it's good that they're doing it,” said student, Tyler Edwards.

Others students say it makes back-to-school shopping more difficult. “I just have to be more careful with what shirts I buy. Change my style a little,” said student, Maria Lopez.

While most parents support the new rule, some worry that enforcing it could be a challenge. “I think that's going to be a little tricky, because it puts a little bit of a policeman approach to the educators, and they really need to focus more on teaching,” said Tom Pederson, AISD parent.

The school board president says they'll do both… and in time, she says, the no cleavage rule will be no problem.

Sounds like they're more worried they might have to do a little parenting than worried the teachers will have to police.

I wonder if this includes prom night, homecoming, and all the other silly football related rituals the big haired texas sluts clamor to be apart of.

Secondly, what about all the leg and poon flashing during cheerleading?

I read about this the other day and almost posted it but didn't want to get into a big discussion about why I think it's kind of stupid. It reminds me of the old days when girls were forced to kneel and have their skirts measured. I was too young to have been subjected to that but I seem to remember the skirt couldn't be more than a certain number of inches from the ground and if it was, they were sent home. So how are they going to enforce this? Only a certain number of inches of bosom will be allowed to show? It's a bit absurd and not really living in reality.

We did the skirt measuring thing when I was in high school in the mid-90s. If someone was suspected of having a skirt or shorts that were too short, out came the ruler. If it was too short (more than 2 inches above the knee), you went home to change or you sat in detention after school.

I see what you're saying about how to judge it, but I think it's like the Supreme Court on pornography - you know it when you see it. If your hooters hang out of your top, don't wear it.

Oh my god! I thought that crap went out in the early '60's! I'm completely gobsmacked that it was brought back. Did no one find this practice even slightly demeaning?
I'm yanking my kids out of school at the earliest possible date. All these fucked up attitudes are going to turn them into judgemental douchebags with every ounce of originality sucked out of them.

Well, keep in mind this was Alabama, not the capital of progressiveness. I thought it was ridiculous in that if something was a fraction of an inch shorter than 2 inches above the knee, you were changing clothes or sitting in detention. I can understand not allowing a skirt that grazes the koose, but such strict rules are ludicrious.

Actually, I'm opposed to school uniforms, too. I know a lot of people who are all for them for various reasons, but I just don't agree. It isn't preparing children for the real world, where not everyone shows up to work everyday in a drab khaki pants and blue polo shirt ensamble.

Has anyone ever taken notice of catholic schoolgirl uniforms?

Those aren't skirts, they're MINI skirts. Those things barely cover their asses!

School uniforms are worn in Oz, certainly until around grade 8 in Govt schools, and right through to 12th grade in most private schools and I'm a fan. For a start you don't have even half the laundry to do during the week and it also stops 15yr olds trying to out-slut each other although of course some of them bend the rules if they can on things like skirt length. But since most private schools are single-sex anyway the to need to dress like truckstop ho's to attract doofus football players doesn't apply anyway. Uniform is such a part of school culture here nobody thinks twice about looking like dags wearing the same thing as everyone else. They are at school to learn dammit, not look 'hot' although some of the Lolitas I see in formal school uniforms would probably look totally yummy to your average dirty old man.

I remember those days well. We used to have to kneel and our skirt had to still be on the floor not above the floor.

there were other dress code restrictions as well. i think it is a good idea overall. keep the minds focused on learning not fashion.

I remember having to be measured. I'm all for freedom of expression, but it is a bit distracting to teach girls who leave nothing to the imagination. It's tough for the guys to concentrate, too. I really don't want someone's tits flopping in my face while I'm trying to help them.

I don't wear low-cut tops to school for the same reason they shouldn't -- it's not appropriate.

I really don't have an issue with dress codes or even uniforms at all. And I'm extremely liberal and self-expressive and used to come up with some very "creative" outfits when I was younger, pink/green/purple hair, etc. Even given that, I really wouldn't have minded having a uniform. Kids are in school to learn, to socialize, to hopefully grow as individuals. If you can give them one less thing to worry about and one less thing to distract them, so much the better, in my opinion.

Also, while you may not have to wear uniforms in the whole of the work force (though in a lot of cases you actually do), you should have some concept of what is appropriate dress. School, in my mind, is like kids' version of their work, and a large part of the problems that the education system suffers from today are due to kids' not giving the system the proper respect. If they can at least get it into their heads that school is something you dress decently for, it could go a long way towards elevating the respect school is given. Of course this doesn't work perfectly across the board, it's only one factor - but it can't hurt.

Mind you, you'll never see me pushing for uniforms to be introduced into schools that don't already have them, but I just can't force myself to think of them as a bad idea.

Most kids dress pretty much alike anyway from what I've seen. I don't mind the uniform idea, and Grimm's right about those skirts. I live near a few private schools and they're micro minis.
