16.36 Our Washington correspondent, Raf Sanchez, has the following observation:

It's still not clear what happened to today's Malaysia Airlines flight but last night, as the US announced new sanctions on Russia, American officials suggested Russian weapons were behind the downing of a Ukrainian transport aircraft on Monday. Here's what they had to say:

"On July 14th, Ukrainians lost an An-26 transport jet, which was shot down from an altitude of 21,000 feet, with eight crew on board. And only very sophisticated weapons systems would be able to reach this height."

And I don't see anybody so far trying to poo-poo reports that it was shot down, so it looks like it was. Even Ukrainian "officials" are admitting as much. Jesus H Christ.

17.06 Raf Sanchez, our Washington correspondent, sends the following update from the US.

Obama is heading to Delaware and to New York today to talk about the American economy but will also be dealing with is looking like a full-blown international crisis.

He ignored questions from reporters about the Malaysian plane as he walked to his helicopter on the South Lawn of the White House this morning.

Here's what he said last night about Russian activities in Ukraine:

Along with our allies, with whom I’ve been coordinating closely the last several days and weeks, I’ve repeatedly made it clear that Russia must halt the flow of weapons and fighters across the border into Ukraine; that Russia must urge separatists to release their hostages and support a cease-fire; that Russia needs to pursue internationally-mediated talks and agree to meaningful monitors on the border.

17.04 And here's another image of the BUK missile.

    17.03
It's thought that the plane was shot down by a BUK surface-to-air missile.

This is what they look like.

16.57 More detail on the circumstances of the crash - although it must be stressed that this is only preliminary information.

Interfax-Ukraine quoted another Ukrainian official as saying the plane disappeared from radar when it was flying at 10,000 metres (33,000 feet), a typical cruising altitude for airliners.

It came down at Torez, near Shakhtersk, some 40 km (25 miles) from the Russia border. The area has been the scene of fighting between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian rebels.

16.56 REUTERS - UKRAINE PRIME MINISTER ORDERS INVESTIGATION INTO MALAYSIAN "AIRPLANE CATASTROPHE", SAYS PLANE WAS EN ROUTE FROM AMSTERDAM

16.54 Witnesses from the town of Torez in the Donetsk Region told RIA Novosti that plane wreckage and dead bodies have been located in the vicinity. The crash took place near the Hrabovo village, outside Torez.

16.53 Interestingly, Russia Today says that the Ukrainian rebels - backed by Russia - have denied any involvement in the plane crash.
The Donetsk People’s Republic, where fighting continues between Kiev and opposition, has rejected any involvement in the incident, as there are reports that the plane was shot down.
It said its self-defense forces just don’t have such military equipment.
Residents have reported about finding debris from a plane, which they say could belong to the Malaysian Boeing. They also said no bodies have been seen, RIA Novosti reports.

16.52 Russia Today has the following report:

The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Geraschenko said the plane carrying 285 passengers and 15 crew members fell.

16.50 Reports suggest that the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile called a BUK.

    Colin Freeman explains:

The BUK is a self-propelled, medium-range surface-to-air missile systems in the Soviet era and designed to engage cruise missiles, smart bombs, aircraf and and unmanned aerial vehicles. Modern versions can reach up to 80,000 feet.

16.47 Reaction to the plane crash is beginning to come in now.

More and more airlines are saying they will no longer fly over Ukrainian airspace.

This is so tragic, I have no words.

Up to 10 British and 23 American passengers feared dead after Malaysian Airlines MH17 is shot down over Ukraine

    • Between five and 10 British passengers were among the 280 on board
    • Reportedly 23 Americans on board the plane which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur
    • Flight MH17 believed to have been shot down in eastern Ukraine
    • Body parts and wreckage spread over nine-mile area, suggesting plane broke up mid-air
    • Ukrainian interior ministry says plane was shot down by a BUK surface-to-air missile

Between five and 10 British passengers are among the 295 feared dead after a Malaysian Airlines plane was 'shot down' on the Russia-Ukraine border, Whitehall sources tonight told MailOnline.

There were reportedly 23 American passengers on the flight, according to Interfax news agency.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: 'I'm shocked and saddened by the Malaysian air disaster. Officials from across Whitehall are meeting to establish the facts.'
At a news conference on Thursday afternoon, President Obama said that authorities were 'working to confirm' whether any American passengers on board.

Flight MH17, which was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew and took off from Schiphol airport at lunchtime today.
It is believed the plane was struck by BUK surface-to-air missile at 33,000ft around 20 miles before entering Russian airspace.
Witnesses say body parts are scattered over a distance of 15km, suggesting the plane broke up in mid-air.

A spokesman from the Foreign Office would not be drawn on whether any British nationals had been on board the plane.
We are aware of the reports and are urgently working to establish what has happened, he said.

Asked about reports that up to 10 British people had been on board, the spokesman added: Our first priority is to establish if there are any British persons on board but we are not in a position to go beyond that line.

David Cameron has summoned officials from across Whitehall for urgent talks at 7pm to discuss the latest on the crash, and what is known about any British casualties.
The Foreign Office is in talks with consular teams in Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur to obtain passenger lists to establish how many UK nationals were on board.
Among those feared dead is a Dutch man who posted a photo on Facebook of the plane on the tarmac just hours before the crash.

Initially, friends commented on the photo wishing him happy holidays. But their messages turned to ones of concern once news of the crash broke.
Based on the number of flights leaving Amsterdam's Schipol airport, and the timing of his Facebook status, it is feared he was on the fated flight.
Pictures and footage taken from the wreckage show the charred remains of passports and suitcases scattered on the crash site.

Emergency workers are seen tackling the blazes that broke out after the aircraft crashed near Donestsk, where pro-Russian rebels have been fighting Ukrainian government forces.

TV pictures from the scene showed a pall of smoke billowing into the sky apparently from the stricken aircraft.

The missile system is an old Soviet-built weapon designed to engage light aircraft, cruise missiles and drones.

Defence experts have expressed fears in the past they could be used to target at civil aircraft.
Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telephone conversation told U.S. President Barack Obama that a Malaysian airplane crashed on Ukrainian territory, the Kremlin said.
An unverified image posted online show Ukrainian inspecting what appears to be wreckage from the doomed flight

Malaysian Airlines said they have no information about any survivors.

In a tweet, the airline said: 'Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow.'

A Boeing spokesman said: Our thoughts and prayers are with those on board the Malaysia Airlines airplane lost over Ukrainian airspace, as well as their families and loved ones.

'Boeing stands ready to provide whatever assistance is requested by authorities.'

The jet would have been flying at high altitude on an intercontinental flight that took it over the crisis hit region of Ukraine, where the authorities have accused Russia-backed separatists of previous attacks on aircraft.

U.S. President Barack Obama has been briefed on the ongoing investigation.
