Default Hacker Gains Access to Web Cam in Baby's Room

Terrifying: Stranger Hacks Texas Family’s Baby Monitor, Speaks to Little Girl

    by Fox News Insider// Aug 14 2013 // 11:28am
    As seen on America's Newsroom

This is sure to be the creepiest story you'll hear all day. A hacker apparently took control of a Texas family’s baby monitor, giving the stranger access to the little girl’s bedroom.

According to her parents, they heard the man saying the little girl’s name, Allyson, and calling her a “little s---.” He was also able to turn the camera-enabled monitor around so as to get a better look at the room.

Allyson’s father Marc Gilbert said, “As a father, I’m supposed to protect her against people like this. So, it’s a little embarrassing to say the least but it’s not going to happen again.”

Former Detective John Lucich joined America’s Newsroom to describe just how something like this could happen. “According to some of the experts who looked at this case, they felt that somebody came through the wireless and that is the scariest part of this case. Because when someone comes through your internet connection, they could be anywhere in the world. When they are coming through your wireless, they have to be within range of your house, so most likely this pervert was within 500 feet of the house.”

Parents can help safe guard their homes by having strong wireless passwords and by not broadcasting their SSIDs, according to Lucich.

I saw this over the weekend on CNN. They were interviewing the dad at the house and he said they knew the child's name because it's on her wall behind her bed. Scary that he could see that!!

^^ Ok that makes sense. Still really creepy.

I guess I never thought about someone hacking into a wifi signal and being able to do something like this. I wonder if that means someone could hack a wifi signal and say, watch a you through your computer cam?

It may have to be active or on though, I am not sure. My husband tried to explain it to me but I was new TVs have some capabilities for 2 way transmission also, as far as I know. Not that anyone does this, but from what I understand it is possible, and no, he's not a conspiracy fanatic. Here is more for you:
The disturbing crime isn't unique, unfortunately.
The newly-crowned Miss Teen USA recently revealed she was secretly photographed in her room after her computer's webcam was hacked.
Cassidy Wolf, who took the crown on Saturday, said she was horrified to learn a stranger had hacked into her computer before trying to extort her on the promise the photos would not be leaked.
The 19-year-old from Temecula, California now travels the country to tell her story and warn other teenagers about cyber-crime.
    lol sorry, it's huge.

I bet this wasn't "hacked" at all. Someone probably just left the default passwords on.
As Canadian as possible under the circumstances

that part (sadly) made me giggle a teeny bit... but yeah, I'd freak out if I walked in my kiddos room and some strange man's voice was coming out of the monitor! I'd be pretty sure it was posessed!
    Kill him.
    Kill her.

Dateline or one of the crime shows I watch ran a similar story about how hackers can imbed a p p l e t s after one visits a site so that they can see what's up through computer web cams. Given my propensity to wear a tin foil hat, have had sticky notes on the web cam lens on every laptop.

OK, just searched -- found it. Was an NBC News report:
