Contrary to some theories, no bomb was planted in the Hindenburg, according to the Daily Mail.

The explosion that destroyed the Hindenburg was caused by static electricity and a buildup of hydrogen after the dirigible flew through a thunderstorm, according to a team of experts, the Daily Mail reported.
The accident May 6, 1937, that killed 36 people took place as the huge airship was preparing to land at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey and prompted several theories as to the cause.
British aeronautical engineer Jem Stansfield and a team of researchers based in San Antonio, Texas, concluded that the airship ignited when the ground crew ran to take the landing ropes, effectively earthing the ship and causing a spark, the British newspaper said on its website Monday.
Stansfield and his team said the goal of their experiments, which are the subject of a British Channel 4 documentary to be aired Thursday, was to rule out theories ranging from a planted bomb to explosive properties in the paint used on the Hindenburg, the Daily Mail reported.
The first of the great long-distance passenger dirigibles, the Graf Zeppelin, went into service in 1928. The 800-foot Hindenburg, only slightly smaller than the Titanic, followed in 1936.
The zeppelin era was short-lived, however, after the Hindenburg crash, accompanied by a dramatic eyewitness radio account and photographs.

And now this cable miniseries about the disaster will be on this month...with a ridiculous sabotage subplot.

I didn't know there was going to be a miniseries, I'll probably watch it just because it's always creeped me out so much. When I was a kid, our school library had this series of illustrated stories on world disasters (which just sounds awful looking back on it) and the Hindenburg one scared me the most. There were pictures of all these people - adults and children - trapped inside and running from the flames. I guess that's not the sort of thing you see in grade school libraries these days?

It's called Hindenburg: The Last Flight. It's got Greta Scacchi in it, and some European actors who I'm not familiar with. I think it's going to be on Encore? It was actually filmed two years ago in Europe, and finally will be broadcast here.

ETA: It will premiere on March 11.

Thanks, Bitter. I might check it out if it ends up on Netflix or something.

I saw a doc on the Hindenburg some time last year, I think. They had some footage one of the passengers had been filming during the trip - very interesting to watch.

They did a movie back in the 70s (possibly early 80s) called The Hindenburg, with George C. Scott. He blew the damn thing up, or was trying to stop someone from doing it. I forget--I've slept since then. It was pretty crappy.
