San Francisco To Offer Residents Universal Health Insurance

SAN FRANCISCO -- The city of San Francisco is going forward with something that the federal and state governments are shying away from -- universal healthcare.

Flanked by supervisors and doctors, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced the creation of a new health-care program Tuesday.

The $200 million plan would service 82,000 uninsured city residents.

"San Francisco is not waiting around for new federal or state constructs or mandates. It's moving forward to fulfill its moral obligation to insure the 82,000 San Franciscans that are currently uninsured," Newsom said.

That's wonderful.

My state offers health insurance to children in families which make too much money for medicaid. It's great, but I wish something could be offerred to the adults, even with lower premiums or something. There are lots of families here whose kids are covered, but what if mom or dad gets sick or injured?

I want to know how they are going to pay for it? it is already too expensive to live there, now are they going to pay higher local taxes to cover the uninsured winos and prostitutes in the tenderloin area? i say give it a go if the people are willing to pay, BUT it better not be funded with state tax money without a state-wide vote.

Socialism will weaken this country and destroy the will of the people- look at England! And Canada- they haven't launched anything higher than a balloon. This Universal Health Insurance is the first step to becoming a slave of the state. Laissez-faire capitalism is the answer.

Actually we had the Avro Arrow which beat anything you weirdos put in the sky, and would have kept beating it for 20 years if threats of nuclear annihilation hadn't been leveled at us.

Warmongering twits.

Do I have to brag about my ample knowledge of England and Canada now?

I'll keep my enlightened feminazi mouth shut. But man, we are not here to give any geography, history, sociology or philosophy lessons!

I do wonder how SF will afford health insurance if there's so much inflation in the city. Still I do think that it's good that their will be some medical help for those there that can't afford health insurance. Maybe this could be a step in Universal health care for the whole country.

You mean the introduction of socialism to the masses under the guise of altruism.

Ok, i'm sorry.

What is so bad about socialism?

Seriously, list the reasons of why it's terrible.

Do you even know, or are you just repeating some 1950's soundbites? I find it hard to believe you know ANYTHING about socialism given the dreadful lack of education on every other subject you've displayed here, and your own admission of not having undertaken any higher education.

well one thing is more taxes; taxes on everything and no one likes taxes. I've read how in England the taxes are ridiculous, but at least you know where your money is going unlike here where your money goes to Iraq and Govt. contracts in Iraq and Katrina destruction!

omg what happened to this country?! It started out w/ good intentions...after slaughtering all the natives to the land. *shrugs and returns to her alcoholism*
