COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When a local teenager saw a car headed right at him, he jumped into action -- not to save himself, but to protect a friend.
The incident began shortly after midnight Sunday on Camden Road, NBC 4's Elizabeth Scarborough reported.
Jordan Smith's truck broke down, so he and a friend pushed the truck down the street and across from his house, up onto a hill. They were working on the truck, when a car appeared in the other direction.
"I had a sense that something was coming up from behind me," Smith said.
But his friend said he had no idea the car was coming.
"My first reaction was to move, and then that quick, I instantly thought, like, 'If I move, then my friend's not going to see him coming and he's going to get hit by the car,'" Smith said. "I pushed him as hard as I could."
Smith said the car crushed him against his truck.
"It threw me into the air and I was just shocked," he said.
Smith's friend crawled to the house to get help, Scarborough reported.
"He saved my life and I'm grateful, so grateful, from the bottom of my heart," his friend said.
The alleged driver, Patrick Jones, was arrested and is facing several charges.
Smith's lower leg was amputated and his friend suffered only minor injuries.
"It doesn't bother me that I lost my leg. I wouldn't change it for the world. I'd rather have people coming to visit me here than going to a funeral this weekend," Smith said. "If I could go back to the scene, I'd save his life again."
