Default Two-Year-Old Hit-and-Run Victim Left to Die in Street in China

Last week, a two-year-old girl wandering in the street in a market in Foshan, China, was hit by a van. The driver stopped for a moment and continued on, rolling over the girl again with the van's rear wheels. Over the course of the next seven minutes, as she lay in the street bleeding, 17 passersby walked over and around her—one truck ran over her again—without helping.

There's surveillance video of the accident and aftermath here if you want to ruin your week. Eventually a trash collector stopped to look after the girl and call an ambulance. While some reports indicated that she had died of her injuries, the Guardian says she is "braindead...and could die at any time." Why would a bicyclist ride past a dying two-year-old lying in the street, glance at her, and carry on? Why would a woman with he own child walk past a bleeding little girl without stopping? From the Guardian:
The widespread reluctance to help strangers has already lead to an anguished public debate in the country. Many say they are too scared, blaming extortion attempts by people who have accused Good Samaritans of causing their injuries –- and judges who have backed such claims. But some talked of a new moral low after seeing passersby –- including a woman holding a small girl by the hand – walk around a two-year-old lying in a pool of blood....

One [online commenter] said that while the footage was heartbreaking he would have been "numb" to Yueyue too. "Would you be willing to throw your entire family's savings into the endless whirlpool of accident compensation? Aren't you afraid of being put into jail as the perpetrator? Have you ever considered that your whole family could lose happiness only because you wanted to be a great soul?" he wrote.
For the record, it doesn't take a "great soul" to help a dying child. Just a person.

Would love to say that I'm shocked but I'm not. Horrified, yes. Disgusted, yes. I'm always amazed (and not in a good way) at humanity's indifference to itself.

Life is very cheap in China. And she was 'only' a girl so big deal.
How can you trust anything that bleeds for 3 days every month but doesn't die?

Baby girls are left by the roadside to die. Who knows whether she wasn't dumped on the street for this very purpose.

There are so many people who want to adopt kids no matter what and yet this stuff is still going on.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. --Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

An update. The child survived, the truck drivers were arrested (security cams probably got their license plates), the woman who saved her will receive about $18,000 in rewards:

Amid Anger Over Grisly Collision, China Recognizes a Humble Hero - Global Spin - TIME.com

If there is a bright note to the sad story of Wang Yue, the two-year old who was ignored by more than a dozen passers-by after a hit-and-run collision, it is 57-year-old scrap picker Chen Xianmei, who stopped to help the gravely injured toddler. The incident has prompted a vast outpouring of online anger and soul searching as to how so many people could be so callous towards the suffering of a child. Wang Yue was hit by a van in hardware market the southeastern city of Foshan on Thursday. The van that ran over her didn't stop, and a second van that also hit the child didn't stop either. Security camera video of the incident shows multiple people walk or drive past the girl on scooters and three-wheel carts.
Chen arrived about 10 minutes after the girl was hit, and can be seen in the footage dropping her bag of recyclables, straining to move the child out of the path of oncoming vehicles and then calling for help. The child's mother, who was hanging up laundry nearby, came rushing to the scene after hearing Chen's calls, which had been ignored by others, according to state media. On Monday night the child's mother posted an online update that said Yue Yue remained in intensive care and could not breathe on her own, but that she had gained some feeling in her limbs. The drivers of both vans have been arrested.

Chinese press reports said Chen had moved to Foshan from a smaller city in Guangdong, and that she spent her mornings working as a cook and collected bottles and cans in the afternoons. In video and photos online Yue Yue's sobbing parents can be seen bowing before their daughter's rescuer, a skinny woman who appears not much bigger than a child herself. In an interview with the Southern Metropolis Daily, Chen sounded flustered at the response her actions have received. The local government gave her a $3,000 reward, and a businessman reportedly offered another $15,000. "I only did a simple thing," she told the newspaper.

Hmm.... I wouldn't be surprised if it was kept quiet if she died. China don't like stuff like this to be seen by the world. And I bet that woman wouldn't have got a reward if this video hadn't have got so much attention.

Nope. Just a toddler who wandered off to explore.
