Dutch trains substitute plastic bags for bathrooms

AMSTERDAM The Dutch national railway has an unusual solution for passengers who need the bathroom on a train line designed without them: plastic bags.

The rail operator underlined that the bags, introduced Friday, are for use in emergencies only, when a train has stopped and passengers can't be evacuated. The idea has been met with incredulity by politicians and the general public already unhappy with the short-haul "Sprinter" trains' bathroomless design.

NS spokesman Eric Trinthamer confirmed Friday the "pee-bag" plan is not a joke. The bags are kept out of sight in the conductor's booth.

The bags have a cup-shaped plastic top and contain a highly absorbent material that turns urine into a gel-like mixture. After use the bags can be sealed and thrown in the trash.

I'm surprised they aren't marketing the gel-filled bag as an "express pillow".

What about the passengers that have the "shits"? Are they gonna have bags too?

Actually there is a small office-space thingy, they will let you in there when you have to go.

Trains are wobbly. They always are. Someone will miss the bag and pee all over the place.

Oh and the politicians had no answer regarding the 'what if one has to shit'. Or even, what if one has ' the shits' . What if someone has crohn's disease? Some other ailment that makes them pee/shit a lot? pregnant women? We have asked all these questions, they've yet to get back to os on them.

I guess we're lucky they're not doing this on all the trains. Only on shorter routes, <1h. Only they didn't account for the times where a train has mechanical (or other) problems and has to stand still for a while. In the middle of nowhere. Sometimes for hours. When you're not allowed to get out because it's dangerous. They don't want people walking along the tracks. Yeah, what then? No one knows.

I'm the kind of person to just squat and pee right where I can, in a situation like that. Everyone should. That'd teach them.

I am laughing now and would still be laughing if someone told me I had to shit and piss in a bag whilst riding on a train in front of everyone else on said train.
