Plastic surgeons target girls' school
Quote:
A private school for girls ran an advertisement for cosmetic surgery in its annual magazine, it has emerged.
The glossy quarter-page spot featured a picture of an attractive young woman in a low-cut top with the words: "Your new look couldn't be in better hands." It offered a "wide range of cosmetic treatments" from "experienced consultant surgeons".
Do you think teenage girls are pressured to 'look good'? And would you let your daughter have plastic surgery? Tell us in reader comments below
'I'm absolutely horrified. It's a scandal. My daughter is 17 so I suppose she is a prime target for this advert.'
Join the debate » Simon Taylor, a parent at the school which he would not name, said: "I'm absolutely horrified. It's a scandal. My daughter is 17 so I suppose she is a prime target for this advert. It is a mirror of the cynical culture that we live in.
"There is such a pressure on these girls to have the right clothes and the right gizmos and this goes right to the heart of it.
"The school is a community for the girls to develop well-rounded, wellbalanced aspirations about their image and future and this advert goes against all that."
BMI Healthcare said last night it had been contacted by the school about advertising. The advert featured the company's Sloane Hospital in Beckenham, Kent, which offers breast enhancement, tummy tucks, liposuction and nose jobs.
A hospital spokesman said: "As part of our community programme, we place advertisements and sponsor other activities in the community.
"A school requested an advertisement from us for their prospectus for parents which we were happy to place. While the document was aimed at parents we accept that it was inappropriate to provide a preprepared advertisement for our cosmetic services.
"We will ensure that our advertising for outlets such as this is of a more appropriate nature in the future.
"We do not perform our cosmetic treatments on any patients under the age of 18."
BMI said it had not placed adverts in any other school publications. The company owns 49 private hospitals and is owned by the General Healthcare Group.

I agree with the parents who are outraged. This is absolute bullshit. Like kids don't already have enough pressure to conform to some pre-stipulated, bullshit view of what they're supposed to look like. Absolutely moronic.

Re: Plastic surgeons target girls' school
In Switzerland some schools are thinking about going back to a new version of the good old school uniforms, so the kids won't feel the pressure to wear the latest fashion... (and the parents won't have to spend so much on it!!!).
I think it's completely sick to target teenagers who by definition are insecure about their looks.

Re: Plastic surgeons target girls' school
It's about time somebody called these grasping, amoral, unethical plastic surgeons to account. It seems they will do anything to mutilate a client with enough money, even though they must know the result is going to be hideous.
