Huh? Texas arrests bar patrons for being drunk.
Quote:
Mar 23, 2006 — SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said on Wednesday.
The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission's Carolyn Beck.
Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkenness, Beck said.
The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.
"We feel that the only way we're going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this," she said.
"There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they're intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car," Beck said. "People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss."
She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

Something about it reeks of Minority Report and the whole "pre-crime" notion. (that's not a good thing, mind you)

Re: Huh? Texas arrests bar patrons for being drunk.
"At one location, for example, agents and police arrested patrons of a hotel bar. Some of the suspects said they were registered at the hotel and had no intention of driving. Arresting authorities said the patrons were a danger to themselves and others."

Why not have a checkpoint just outside the bar and nab anyone over the limit who got behind the wheel but before they could get on the road? Are they trying to sneak prohibition back onto the books?

Re: Huh? Texas arrests bar patrons for being drunk.
It would certainly seem like they're trying to bring it back. Fucking hell. I bet anything that if el shrubbo started hitting the bottle after his presidency ended (if he hasn't already) they wouldn't be harrassing bar patrons in Texas. And really, has anyone had the pleasure to watch a COP in a bar? Biggest, loudest, most obnoxious drunks in the place, usually.

Re: Huh? Texas arrests bar patrons for being drunk.
the "pre crime" thing is totally true in this case. they fucking admitted it..they are trying to get these people before they drive drunk..not for public intoxication. Another feather in the hat of the great state of Texas! (DH must be so proud, where ever she is )

Really? Why does it not surprise me that the board-that-must-not-be-named would think this would be a good idea? Those people need to knock a couple back and lighten the fuck up.

Re: Huh? Texas arrests bar patrons for being drunk.
Oh dear, I just went over to the board-that-must-not-be-named and randomly dipped into a middle page in their discussion on this. Wow. They really have the most convoluted discussions that all come down to 'I knew someone..' or 'I personally know...' which is the basis for their argument. Wow. I repeat, some of those people really need a cocktail or three.
