Man shot, stabbed older brother's family to death

A 31-year-old man with a history of violence shot his girlfriend and her son to death, stabbed the woman’s five-year-old daughter and then turned the gun on himself at a northeast Portland apartment on Thursday, police confirmed Friday.
Somkhith Soulinho was identified as the killer, said Det. Paul Dolbey, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman.
The woman and two children Soulinho killed were his older brother’s kids and ex-wife, who he was dating, according to family members.
Autopsy results released Friday revealed that 24-year-old Soupaphane Homsombath was shot dead on the couch. Her 8-year-old son Lionel Homsombath was shot twice in the head as he lay in living room and her daughter, 5-year-old Leana Homsombath, was stabbed to death in a bedroom.
Although Soulinho had a troubled past with his old brother Tia Soulinho – he shot Tia in the arm and back in 1999 – police said they weren’t aware of any prior domestic violence incidents involving Somkhith Soulinho and his former sister-in-law.
He spent five years in prison for the prior shooting. He has also spent time in the Oregon State Hospital for mental health issues.
Witnesses reported hearing several shots fired inside the apartment at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday. Dolbey said the landlord unlocked the door for police, who found the bodies.
"It's going to be quite a complicated scene, each one of the victims represents a mini crime scene, if you will, and then you have the overall apartment," Dolbey said.
Tia Soulinho, who lost his brother, children and ex-wife, said the crime was hard to believe.
"I feel a lot of hurt. I feel a lot of pain," Soulinho told The Oregonian newspaper. "But there's nothing I could do about it."
Tia Soulinho said he had a cordial relationship with his younger brother but said most people were scared of him.
Family and friends believe drugs may have played a role in the crime.
The crime scene left police horrified. Chief Derrick Foxworth said some of his officers were "pretty shook up. They're thinking about their own families. ... they see their own kids lying there."
