Forgive my Aussie ignorance but is North Carolina considered part of the South? Because my great-great-grandfather was from an old NC family and he sailed into Sydney in the 1850s, knocked up a local girl and stayed. Does this make me part southern? It was just McJag's mention of caramel cake that made me want to delve into my genealogy.

We could be kin. 4 of my great-greats also came from NC! That carmel cake recipe is to die for, Sugar!

Thanks. I don't think I want any of that sweet tea though, unless it's that special northern tea with all the booze in it.

It was the North bit that threw me - how far south can you be if you're North?

And apparently my gg-grandfather's family has an island named after them in NC. I don't think it's called McJag Island though so not sure if we're cousins.

I looked at a map and it didn't seem very far south, but then to me Texas looks kind of west so I'll just retreat back into Aussie ignorance.

Its not far north, Carolina is split in two, so its just to deisgnate which half of Carolina you're talking about.

I guess I haven't studied the map closely for years (probably since I last read Gone With the Wind). I saw that DC wasn't that far and I always imagined it was further north, because Virginia is also south and seems like it's not even that far to the Canadian border if you jump a couple of states. Also I think my image of the south has always been GWTW or else real redneck, True Blood-type places which I pictured being right down the bottom near the Mississippi delta.

Off to google Mason Dixon line. Time I had a geography lesson.
