Obese man dies in mobile home fire

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - A fire destroyed a mobile home, killing a 600-pound, homebound man who could not be moved out in time despite the efforts of neighbors and firefighters.

Timothy Lee Morris, 45, called 911 from his home when it caught fire Saturday afternoon but couldn’t get out by himself, fire officials said. His daughters, ages 8 and 13, summoned neighbors, but they were unable to move him.

“He was in the front room. We tried and tried to yank him out,” said neighbor Clinton Turner. “He kept saying, ’Help,’ but we couldn’t get him out.”

Authorities said police and firefighters eventually were able to put Morris on a backboard and slide him out the front door. Morris had several health problems, including breathing complications.

“Timmy probably didn’t get burned at all,” Battalion Chief John Nelson said. “He probably died from smoke inhalation.”

Two firefighters were treated at a hospital for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. They were “very emotionally distraught they couldn’t get him out,” Nelson said.

The fire was blamed on an electrical short. The girls’ mother wasn’t home at the time.

That's terrible. You are hearing more and more about these homebound obese people. Personally I don't get it at all, but that's awful that his girls had to go through the heartbreak of not being able to help him.

Lesson learned: put down the twinkies and get on a treadmill so you don't end up combusting with your house on wheels.

Very sad...but I always wonder would these people get to be so big if their family's weren't supplying them with food.

If it were that simple I don't think we'd see so many overweight people. You've got the majority of people spending loads of cash on diet products and gym memberships every year and how many people are able to keep the weight off once they lose it? Very few.

Same question, where in the hell did he get all that damn food from, maybe he did eat them outta house and home. Double wides must be durable these days.

Not only did you lose your home, but your father, and in that way. Horrible.

Well that's my point -I'm assuming this guy couldn't get up and get the food on his own...if it was my husband I'd put his fat ass on a diet instead of enabling.
