Pro-Lifer sink to new low and slander Girl Scouts

I am a scout leader and just got an email with the official statement about fraudulent reports concerning the Girl Scouts and abortion. Here is one of the bullshit articles put out by the lifenews.com followed by the response from the scouts.

New York, NY (LifeNews.com/CFAM) -- The World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides hosted a no-adults-welcome panel at the United Nations this week where Planned Parenthood was allowed to distribute a brochure entitled “Healthy, Happy and Hot.” The event was part of the annual United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) which concludes this week.

The brochure, aimed at young people living with HIV, contains explicit and graphic details on sex, as well as the promotion of casual sex in many forms. The brochure claims, “Many people think sex is just about vaginal or anal intercourse… But, there are lots of different ways to have sex and lots of different types of sex. There is no right or wrong way to have sex. Just have fun, explore and be yourself!”

The brochure goes on to encourage young people to “Improve your sex life by getting to know your own body. Play with yourself! Masturbation is a great way to find out more about your body and what you find sexually stimulating. Mix things up by using different kinds of touch from very soft to hard. Talk about or act out your fantasies. Talk dirty to them.”

The brochure also tells students that national laws requiring HIV-positive people to reveal their status to their partner(s) “violate the rights of people living with HIV” and calls for advocacy to “change laws that violate your rights.” It explains, “There are many reasons that people do not share their HIV status. … They may worry that people will find out something else they have kept secret, like they are using injecting drugs, having sex outside of a marriage or having sex with people of the same gender.”

The Girl Scouts, along with the YMCA have been co-moderating a young women’s caucus that included an “Intergenerational Conversation” side event on “universal access” and “reproductive health.” One recent Girl Scout project “aims at securing the right of women, men and adolescents aged between ten and twenty-five, to better reproductive and sexual health.”??

Also at CSW last week, the heads of various powerful UN agencies including the UN Population Fund, UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Children's Fund and the World Health Organization released a “UN Joint Statement” under the name of the “UN Adolescent Girls Task Force,” which calls for their agencies to promote and support programs “that empower … adolescent girls, particularly those aged 10 to 14 years.”

One of the chief priorities for empowerment is ensuring access to “life-skills based sexuality education, HIV prevention, and sexual and reproductive health.”

The New York Times recently reported that UN Population Fund had co-sponsored a very controversial curriculum with UNESCO, that included teaching children as young as five to be sexually active and training adolescents to advocate for abortion.

Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women of America told the Friday Fax, “Governments and NGOs should be aware of Planned Parenthood’s insidious plan to work with UN agencies and girls’ organizations in order to profit from encouraging kids to be sexually active.”

Dear Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania Member:

I have received numerous telephone calls and emails in recent days, expressing concern and question about the Girl Scouts of the USA's participation in the 54th Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations. It has been the subject of numerous internet stories and blogs that are factually inaccurate and troubling, and I believe it's important that you have the facts provided by the National Council:

The Commission encouraged girls to take action on global issues concerning women and girls.

The Girls Only Workshop was jointly hosted by Girl Scouts of the USA, UNICEF's Working Group on Girls, Girls Learn International and The Grail. The meeting was open only to the girls and participating sponsors.

Only seven adults were in the room at the time of the meeting, each representing one of the sponsors of the event. No one from the Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute was in the room to report on the event.
30 - 35 girls from across the world participated in this event - all of them teenagers.

The girls received only a copy of the document on which they were working, entitled "The Girls' Statement." No other documents were given to the girls as part of this event.

The room in question was also used to host other events over the course of the multi-day conference. Prior to our girls entering the room, we did not "sanitize" the room to ensure that trash or other items were left behind. We did request that those not associated with the sponsors leave the room prior to our session.

The Girl Scouts of the USA was not contacted by the Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute (C-FAM) regarding its initial story to discuss the facts of this event. Had they applied these basic journalistic standards, perhaps the true details of this event would have been reported.

The Mission of Girl Scouting is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place, and the organization continues to take pride in its girl members and looks forward to showing the world what they can do.

As a charter member of Girl Scouts of the USA, Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania remains committed to this Mission and fully supports all National Council principles, practices and policy positions. We have and will continue to rely on the National Council's position statement about its participation in the Commission as we respond to any inquiries we receive, and hope you will use it as the basis for any discussions you have among your fellow Girl Scout members and external parties.

I kind of view the Girl Scouts as dessert mafias. Anytime I see them at my supermarket, I try to avoid them but it's like a spell is put on me, beckoning me closer to them until I find myself with my arms full of cookie boxes and out of $20.

Well, I bet I'll have 3 or 4 emails with this story within a month. I have an aunt and a couple friends who believe shit like this every time, and forward it around like it's the gospel truth.

You know, I'd like to think that people who don't want kids having sex with each other would encourage masturbation way more often as a safe and healthy alternative. But nooooo, because the real issue they have is that sex is dirty, your body is dirty, but they will never admit to the extent of their puritanical prudishness.

You know, I'd like to think that people who don't want kids having sex with each other would encourage masturbation way more often as a safe and healthy alternative. You are so right. Hell, the Catholic Church is great at this shit. Remember the whole 'you'll go blind if you masturbate' crap? The whole idea that your body is impure (more-so if you're a woman) continues apace with the fundies. It's sick and says more about them than anything else.

I sent an email to Steven Ertelt - the founder and editor of the rag. He responded with: Funny, you don't offer any proof showing the report is false. Nice try. The I googled him and had a nice laugh. This man makes his living selling the whole right winged agenda.
