Default Slovenian pet owner killed by dogs after saving them from death

Pet owner killed by dogs after saving them from death - Yahoo! News

LJUBLJANA (Reuters) – A Slovenian who saved his three dogs from being put down for attacking humans was himself mauled to death by them, police said Wednesday.
"Three dogs bit their 52-year-old owner to death in Ljubljana yesterday," police spokeswoman Maja Adlesic said.
Four years ago, the three bullmastiffs attacked and seriously injured a passer-by outside their owner's house. They spent years in custody pending legal hearings, but when one of them attacked a dog handler, authorities ordered them to be put down.
Their owner, a doctor, succeeded last June in his legal appeals to get the dogs back, sparking a national controversy. After his death, an opposition party said the agriculture minister should resign for failing to stop the dogs from being released.
The dogs attacked the man in his garden Tuesday, killing him before the police arrived. All three dogs were put down following the attack.

I'm kind of surprised the dogs attacked their owner. Maybe he was a total ass hat and they had enough. Perhaps he abused them.

I think bull mastiffs can be aggressive towards strangers but this sounds a little odd to me.

dogs are (can be)killing animals when not taken care of properly-nothing new with that,
also some races can attack their owners without any reason

It can be difficult to determine what really goes on behind the scenes, but there are a lot of stories in the United States of more-aggressive breeds of dogs eventually attacking their owners. Sometimes the dogs had a prior history of aggressiveness, sometimes not.

Exactly - and the first attack was as a pack, just the same as the final attack. If the owner was willing (stupid enough?) to believe that these dogs could be rehabilitated then the pack should have been split up to weaken the dogs sense of dominance. Personally speaking, though, if I had a dog or dogs that had seriously injured an innocent person in an unprovoked attack I would WANT them putting down, as the pain that I'd feel at losing my pets would be nothing compared to the guilt that I would feel at the devastation my animals had wrought on another person.

They had been in custody for years. They probably blamed him.
