Default Blogger tweets: I'm having a miscarriage... thank goodness

Bad news broadcast: Penelope Trunk announced miscarriage on Twitter

A Twitter user told the world she was having a miscarriage - while sitting in a meeting.

Penelope Trunk, the 42-year-old boss of US internet career advice firm Brazen Careerist, tweeted: "I'm in a board meeting. Having a miscarriage. Thank goodness, because there's a f***ed-up three-week hoop-jump to have an abortion in Wisconsin."
The tweet spread round the world within hours and soon angry bloggers were labelling Miss Trunk callous and uncaring. In response, she said it was a 'public service announcement'.
"It got people talking about the taboos of miscarriage and unwanted pregnancy," she told CNN. "I have no regrets. I actually thought that having a miscarriage at work was no big shakes."
"It seems everyone in the world would prefer a miscarriage over an abortion – even the Pope. It's no different to me saying what I had for lunch.
"I'm not really sure why people are offended. To those who don't want to know, what would I say? Don't log on," she added.
Miss Trunk had already arranged to have an abortion in Chicago as there was a three-week waiting list in her home state of Wisconsin.
"To accuse me of a cruel disregard of those women whose hearts are broken when they lose a baby is wrong. When I had my first miscarriage, I was inconsolable. The difference was I desperately wanted that baby."
The message prompted more than 600 comments on her blog, with one accusing her of mocking 'the complex, conflicting and often overwhelming feelings that pregnancy and loss can evoke', and another saying 'You are a poor excuse for a human being.'
Writing in The Washington Post, Kathleen Parker said Miss Trunk had trivialised 'not only the miscarriage but what little remains of our humanity'.
Not everybody was appalled by Miss Trunk's candour.
"You're shining a light intro areas that many share but mostly go unexposed," said one comment.

Seriously? What an attention whore. Twitter is the perfect vehicle for the legions of attention whores in the world, that's why it's so annoying to me.

So, she was able to continue with a board meeting and tweet while having a miscarriage? That's taking multi-tasking one step too far.

I don't get the hatred. She was happy and relieved to have a miscarriage instead of having to go through the hassle and expense of an abortion. Nothing wrong with that.

There are some things people should keep private and I
think this is one of them...

Oh, I agree she really didn't need to tweet about this, but I meant I don't get the hatred from people cited in the article. It seems like there was more condemnation at her relief re. the miscarriage than at her tweeting about it.

I think depending on your situation and feelings it's acceptable to feel relief... especially when women who decide to get an abortion are so vilified by certain sectors of society. Tweeting about it, however, just makes it seem so casual.

I don't get it either. To her it was a relief. Sure it's a trigger for some women and can be construed as insensitive perhaps. Still, it was an unwanted pregnancy.

I think in general, tweeting about everything or mentioning it via Facebook status is can be a bit indulgent.

yeah, she's an attention whore for posting about it on twitter but i don't get the hatred. being pregnant is only a good thing when you want it. in the case where it's unwanted, a miscarriage is like the best christmas and birthday present ever rolled into one.

i'm pretty sure i had a miscarriage when i was 19 and spending the summer far from home and in a place where i wouldn't have had a clue of where to begin to look for a doctor to perform an abortion. my period was 5 weeks late and even though i was doubled over in pain and bleeding when it happened, all i felt was relief and joy that it was over with.

p.s. VENUS!! welcome back!!

I've been reading her column for a couple of years because she's such an insane, narcissistic trainwreck.

She's been going through a divorce and earlier bragged about missing her birth control pills just to let everyone know that she found a guy who would screw her, bragged about forgetting to get the cat fixed and making it have an abortion, and bragged about the number of abortions she's already had. Plus she brags whenever she finds some guy to perform oral sex on her. She's bizarre and pitiful. That's why people attack her. She's a sad attention whore.
