Christian woman may sue after police investigate 'gay hate crime' letter

A woman who complained about a gay Pride march in Norwich has said she may sue the police and local council after she was investigated for possible hate crime.
Pauline Howe, 67, wrote the letter to Norwich city council to complain about a Pride march she saw.
In the letter, she described gays as "sodomites". She added that homosexuality had "contributed to the downfall of every empire" and was a major cause of sexually transmitted infections.
Howe added: "It is shameful that this small, but vociferous lobby should be allowed such a display unwarranted by the minimal number of homosexuals."
She was then warned in a letter from Bridget Buttinger, the council's deputy chief executive, that she could face charges for hate crime.
Buttinger wrote: "The content of your letter has been assessed as potentially being hate related because of the views you expressed towards people of a certain sexual orientation."
The council then passed Howe's details to the police and she was interviewed at her home by two officers who later decided that no crime had been committed.
Howe told the Sunday Telegraph she was not homophobic but was merely expressing her Christian beliefs.
She has now contacted the Christan Institute for advice and is considering whether to take legal action.

This was a massive and dangerous over reaction by the council. She was exercising free speech which is the most important element of any democracy. Here is what Outfront UK said in response:

That this woman has loony views is without question, but that the Bridget Buttinger from the Council threatened her and that she was interviewed by the police under the guise of protecting gay people from hate crimes is absurd and dangerous, and only serves to give fodder to the anti-gay and far right agenda as promoted by groups like the Christian Institute and the BNP.

The Council should have replied to saying that the same right that protects her writing her letter is the same right that allows the gay pride march to go ahead. She should be allowed to stand on the pavement as the march goes by and scream anti-gay obscenities till she is hoarse, such is the importance of free speech.

The fact that she was investigated for expressing her views gives the far right forces that want to destroy democratic values the ammunition they need. The fault lies squarely with Bridget Buttinger and other unelected officials in public bodies that are misinterpreting the laws to protect people against speech that incites violence and undermining the most valuable weapon against extremism, free speech.

Well I kind of have some split views on this, what with our 'Free Speech' legacy and all here, and your 'Hate speech" laws in Canada. I can see both sides. But anyway, I LOVE the 'rewording' of the text-always a good way to let people see how it really is.

She would be fine here in the US-but other nations have hate 'Speech" laws..nations like Canada..and she could face prosecution in nations like that if she lived there. No KKK marches andPhelps protested allowed in Canada like it is here. It is an interesting question...should we have 'hate speech' laws here? Our right to 'free speech' is already compromised in many ways..no threatening the Prez or yelling fire in a crowded theater...this could be just an extension of that..

Exactly. In this particular case, she lodged a hateful and homophobic complaint, but she wasn't inciting violence. This should be covered under free speech, even as abhorrent as it is. Hell, we have Holocaust deniers, people who still think interracial marriage is wrong, etc. I find their views absolutely repugnant but I don't think we should censor them unless they start inciting violence.
