Thumbs down California high school student gang-raped outside dance

Richmond High student gang-raped outside dance

(10-26) 12:33 PDT RICHMOND -- A suspect has been arrested and several others are being sought in the rape of a 15-year-old girl who was attacked outside a Richmond High School homecoming dance, police said today.
The attack happened late Friday in an alley on the north side of the campus and was witnessed by nearly a dozen people, none of whom reported the attack, said Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan.
"What's shocking about it is there were so many people willing to involve themselves in such a serious crime," Gagan said. Also shocking, he said, was "the number of people who witnessed it and who were in the area of it occurring who did not take steps to stop it, report it or help our victim."
The girl, a student at Richmond High, left the dance about 9:30 p.m. Friday, while the event was still going on, and was walking alone on 23rd Street, police said. She was expecting a ride from her father but was diverted by a schoolmate who invited her to join a group of people hanging out and drinking in a courtyard on campus, Gagan said.
The girl drank a large amount of alcohol before she was sexually assaulted by members of the group, police said.
The attack continued for some time, police said. Around midnight, officers who had received a tip about the assault went to the school and found the girl semi-conscious near a picnic table, Gagan said.
Manuel Ortega, 19, was arrested as he was running from the scene, police said. He is not a student at Richmond High. Police are looking for other people who may have taken part in the attack or watched it, Gagan said.
Ortega was arrested on suspicion of rape, robbery and kidnapping. He was being held at Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez in lieu of $800,000 bail.
Marin Trujillo, a spokesman for the West Contra Costa Unified School District, said today that the dance was a safe event that had been monitored by four police officers and three school administrators.
Trujillo noted that the assault had occurred away from the dance, and said the district believes it is incumbent on parents to ensure their children travel to and from such events safely.
"There is limited manpower. We cannot follow every kid to their home, but we do clear the campus at the end of the dance," he said.
"Of course, this is an absolutely horrible thing to happen to one of our students," Trujillo said. "We wish her the best, and we hope that she recuperates as soon as possible."

A high school dance that needs to monitored by 4 police officers?

Did the girl complain? I mean, did she report anything? Why is it rape?
She didn't just get wasted and have sex? I mean they said it happened in a dark alley and nobody could see, but if I was getting raped, somebody would hear me screaming.

Unfortunately, you can't always control the circumstances of your rape. What if you're gagged?

I'm wondering if it wasn't a little like this scenario...only with teenagers

What happened to her father who was supposed to be picking her up at 9:30?

Poor girl.

Jesus Hummus, 4 posts into the thread and it's already blame the victim. Awesome, just awesome.

I'm not blaming anybody. That was my point. Because based on the information given in the linked article, it seemed suspicious to me. That is all I voiced, obviously it rubbed you the wrong way.

I was suspicious because in the article it doesn't give a statement from the girl's father, the girl herself, any witnesses or anything from the person who made the call.

A Google map of the area shows it to be on a fairly busy street with a store across the street. There are also plenty of houses in the area.
I know the article stated that it was witnessed by many people who said nothing. But what if it looked like nothing was happening?

I know she was transported to the hospital, but even after that there is no more information from her parents or witnesses or anything. If you look through other articles on the attack the number of people who witnessed it, the way she was found and the people still at the scene when police arrived varies greatly.

I'm not saying she didn't get raped, I'm not saying she wasn't hurt. I'm saying it was fishy and why immediately call it a rape? When obviously the police don't know what happened, the victim isn't saying anything that we know of, and the witnesses aren't either.

I'm a little pessimistic of nearly everything that I read. I'm not heartless and if it was a true rape then I do feel bad for the girl, but I'm not completely convinced, given the information available that she was indeed raped. Beaten, yes. Raped, I don't know.

Bystander apathy - IMHO if people saw it happen and didn't do anything then they are accessories to a crime.

Hummus, i cant get past the comment you made about the victim not screaming. you DO realize that not every person that is raped is able to scream, dont you?

Just how large was the amount of alcohol the girl drank? Maybe she was passed out?
