Nicollet, Minn (AP) — A Minnesota wildlife official confirms that a 12-year-old girl is the youngest Minnesotan to kill a moose in the modern era.
Department of Natural Resources spokesman Lou Cornicelli says Kelly Holmin of Nicollet achieved the distinction earlier this month.
The bull moose had a 58-inch antler spread. Kelly bagged it Oct. 13 on the Gunflint Trail.
She and her father endured a cold week of wind and snow before they saw the 1,100-pound moose about 75 yards away. Kelly dropped it with a single shot.
Jeff Holmin says his daughter was so happy that she was crying with excitement.
This wasn't the seventh-grader's first experience with hunting. She and her father take annual grouse-hunting trips, and she bagged her first wild turkey last spring.

Yeah - great idea. Cry tears of joy for killing defenseless animals.

I showed this picture and article to my husband. He does not have a problem with people killing animals if they eat their catch afterward. Needless to say, we just had a fight over it. I will never, ever understand how people can kill defenseless animals for sport.

But why?! Moose are so cute! Live and let live!
I can understand (humanely) shooting animals if they're a feral introduced pest, for example the farmers here in Australia who shoot rabbits, feral cats, camels etc. They're a problem and they're screwing up the natural environment. Killing wildlife for sport, though? Ugh. I don't get it.
Just shows that for all our pompous parading around and self-praise like we're an advanced species, humans are still bloodthirsty beasts deep down.

It's not the eating meat; it's the killing animals for sport...but I get what you're saying.

I've never understood this argument. (Not being argumentative Wiseguy, just commenting.)
If you eat it, it's okay to kill it. I don't get that. There's a ton of dead meat at the grocery store, why do you have to go out and kill another animal?
And yes I see the huge hypocrisy of eating grocery store meat and being opposed to hunting. I feel bad enough about eating meat, but I'd feel a hell of a lot worse if I killed it myself.

I find it really creepy that a 12 year old would get happiness and joy out of killing an animal.

If you eat it, what's the problem? And there ain't nothing 'defenseless' about a moose.

Yeah me too. I don't think I could have sat on a dead moose either.

Well if you are that hungry, go raise some live chickens, gather their eggs and then butcher them for food or if you hunt, shoot something you will cut up and store in the freezer to eat like a deer (which was what my family did when I was young.)
It's obvious this was just a real thrill for these idiots.

I have no problem with our Native people hunting. They use both the meat and the fur. It's a big part of their lives. Other then that, hunting sucks. I hope I made sense.

I detest Bambi killers. When I was single it was one of the criteria I used whether to date a guy or not. If he hunts, go away.
