Bruising: victim Marsha
A train passenger was beaten up by another woman in her carriage — just for being overweight.
Marsha Coupe, who weighs 22st, was set upon as she travelled from London's Charing Cross to her home in Kent late at night.
She suffered bruising to her chest in the attack and feared she would lose her sight.
Ms Coupe, 53, from Hayes, said: “I was returning home on a train and a woman aged about 38 to 42 sitting across from me started kicking me and said, 'Hey fattie! You should not be on the train, you need two seats!'.
“I had probably 30 to 40 bruises over my chest and my neck. I was terrified I was going to lose my eye.
“London prides itself on being diverse yet there is almost a zero-tolerance on anyone of size. You cannot walk the streets without being verbally or physically assaulted.”
No one was arrested in connection with the attack. Ms Coupe spoke out before a documentary on BBC1 tonight to highlight the problems of the obese.
Campaigners want discrimination against overweight people to be banned by law, as it is in San Francisco.
Eve Hart, 25, a 999 phone operator from Ilford, said she was often turned away from nightclubs because of her weight. She added: “When you go out, you get ready and look your best, and then get abuse.”
In San Francisco, cinemas and restaurants must provide larger seats, and doctors “respect the wishes” of fat patients who do not want to discuss their weight.
