New pills allow you to forego sleep?
Quote:
NEW lifestyle pills will let us live healthily on TWO HOURS sleep a night, it was revealed yesterday.
The idea is that users will be better placed to deal with the pressure of modern life.
Scientists said the tablets would deliver sleep deeper and more refreshing than the real thing.
They could even lead to people being able to go WITHOUT sleep for several days at a stretch. And there will also be pills that deliver what feels like eight hours of sleep in half that time, reported New Scientist magazine.
Russell Foster, a biologist specialising in the natural cycle, said: “The more we understand about the body’s 24-hour clock the more we will be able to override it.”
Prof Foster, of Imperial College London, added: “In ten to 20 years we’ll be able to pharmacologically turn sleep off. Mimicking sleep will take longer but I can see it happening.”
However, Neil Stanley, head of sleep research at the University of Surrey, said: “I think that would be the most hideous thing to happen to society.”
Scientists are hoping to build on the success of the drug Modafinil.
The stimulant, which was launched seven years ago, allows people to wake up refreshed after four hours of sleep.

I've heard a lot of bulls- in my life, but this is close to beat all the rest.
Anyway, I would never EVER give up my sacred 9-10 hours of sleep every night, even if it was possible

Re: New pills not to need sleep?
What about the dreams?
I sleep too little because I stay up late by choice and have to get up early by obligation, but sleep is one of the best things in life (when it's good). I'd rather go into hibernation for 4 months than take a pill to need only 4 hours

Live 'healthily' on two hours sleep? I very much doubt it.

Our bodies go through so many restorative processes while we sleep, I can't imagine that getting less is healthy. I am so sick of this mentality that everyone needs to be doing more, more, more. It's just not right.

There was an X-Files episode like this where scientists did an experiment on Vietnam soldiers and severed some nerve so they wouldn't have to sleep, but the serotonin imbalence that caused had to be offset by the soldiers taking antidepressents. Needless to say, given their starring role as psychos in the episode, the soldiers were not okay after 30 years of not sleeping. Mind you, I do realize that X-Files is fiction, but I agree with hotncmom.
