1 year old baby severely burned in meth lab explosion

BAY COUNTY, Fla. - Investigators in Bay County, Florida say a man and his girlfriend were cooking meth in their home, when the chemicals exploded. Their one-year-old daughter caught fire and is now fighting for her life, with burns across half her body.

"One thing that makes me absolutely sick to my stomach is this mother told us and medical authorities that this child was burned from a grease fire, so this child had been receiving treatment for a grease burn when it is much more severe when you're dealing with chemical burns from a meth lab," said Captain Stanford.

The infant's mother, 31-year-old Tessa Wagy, told officers she pulled Johna out of the crib when she caught on fire, and rolled her on the floor to put out the flames.

The one-year-old's father, 34-year-old John Franklin Osborn fled the scene before officers arrived. He was severely burned on his hands and arms as a result of the blast and was treated at USA Medical Center.

Both Wagy and Osborn were arrested.

"This child is a harmless victim and the Sheriff said it pretty well, John Osborn and Tessa Wagy made their choices. This child had the choices made for her and she's going to suffer for the rest of her life for it," said Captain Stanford.

Officials say baby Johna is in critical condition at the Joseph M. Still Burn Unit in Georgia. She has burns across half her body.

Police say Wagy had three other children in the home during the explosion. One of them is one-month-old. Those children were not harmed.

Osborn and Wagy are being charged with aggravated child abuse, manufacturing methamphetamine resulting in injury to a child, and possession of a listed chemical.

Officials also say Wagy and Osborn did not have custody of baby Johna, because they allegedly abandoned her in Georgia. They both have previous drug charges.

Osborn's sister had custody, and is now facing charges for turning the baby back over to people she knew were dangerous to the child's welfare.

One of the dangers children face when they're near a meth lab in chemical contamination. That's because meth ingredients produce toxic fumes and vapors. Children are also at an increased risk for severe neglect, and are more likely to be physically and sexually abused.

Living conditions in homes with meth labs are deplorable, and usually filthy. Some homeowners even put up traps to alert them to police.

Children also suffer from social problems. A lot of children in meth homes have low self esteem, a sense of shame, and poor social skills.

There is something you can do to help children in unsafe situations like this. You can report their parents, by utilizing a program set up by the Mobile County Sheriff's Office. You can text the word "Meth" to 839-863, and help a child out.
