Muslim fury at sex toy 'Mustafa Shag'
Quote:
FURIOUS Muslims have blasted adult shop Ann Summers for selling a blow-up male doll called MUSTAFA SHAG.
They complained that the novelty sex toy insults the Prophet Muhammad — who also has the title al-Mustafa.
The High Street chain’s jokey £15 mustachioed doll has a 7in manhood and is targeted at hen parties.
But the Muslim Association — based at Manchester’s Central Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre — branded him “obnoxious”.
Yesterday a spokesman said: “This is the name of our Prophet and it’s very upsetting. This thing should be banned.”
In a letter to the store, the Association said: “You have no idea how much hurt, anguish and disgust this obnoxious phrase has caused to Muslims. We are asking you to have our Most Revered Prophet’s name ‘Mustafa’ and the afflicted word ‘shag’ removed.”
Last night Ann Summers said: “If anyone has a better name, please let us know. We’ll happily change it.”

Do any Muslims exist who have a sense of humor? Because it seems not. I'm just wondering how much of the U.S./world is going to pussy out and let their freedom of expression be controlled by a bunch of nutjobs constantly on the lookout for an ax to grind.

Re: Muslim fury at sex toy 'Mustafa Shag'
Well, you people are from a different culture so why would you understand the fury about this in the Islamic culture?
One thing people have to take reason to is that different aesthetics are read differently in different cultures. What is the norm to some and seen as harmless is downright prejudice and offensive to others in their culture.

Wasn't Mustafa the bad guy in the lion king as well?
Or was it Mufasa?

I totally understand that all cultures are different but I think they should all just lighten up, its so obviously not a direct attack so why are they trying to make it seem that way? Its a funny play on words I highly doubt the people who designed it even had this Al fella in mind, its just a name that just so happened to belong to the prophet aswell.
I am really not being ignorant here and I don't want to get into a big racial debate, IMO this is not atall about cultures, its about a bunch of people being over sensitive.

Mufasa, but he's not the bad one, he's the king.

Re: Muslim fury at sex toy 'Mustafa Shag'
So Mohammed happens to have the same name as a blow up doll? Boo frickety hoo. There are lots of guys named Jesus too, but I don't see people stoning them to death for that.
Grow the fuck up and climb out of the 7th century.

It is about cultures.
But you see, you understand it differently than they would. That is just how it is. I was born in the Middle East, but lived in Canada since I was 6. I am a very liberal-minded Muslim and not even a fully practicing Muslim because of the influence of this environment over here. But my parents are pretty traditional and religious. So, I can definetly see why they'd be angry because I understand why they feel that way. I come from that culture.
You cannot just expect to say,oh they should lighten up about it, when in their culture, this is all embedded to be interpreted differently.
Same here, I think it is ridiculous to even be concerned about this such of thing, but I can definetly see why they'd be angry. That is just how it is in their Islamic culture, you cannot use the Prophet's names in any way they think is demeaning since they consider it blasphemous. That is just how their mindset is warped into. So, that is why both sides cannot come to un understanding since they both see it differently.

Re: Muslim fury at sex toy 'Mustafa Shag'
Well, I know I for one was not aware that it was a name for the prophet. I just thought it was a traditional Muslim name (I have a Muslim friend named Mustafa). I realize that that is a lack of knowledge on my part, but I can't imagine they were trying to demean the prophet with this product - it probably was just far too tempting of a play on words. ie. "Must-have-a Shag."

I agree with you...I think it is ridiculous to complain about it and they are overblowing this issue to something it is not. But, I was just implying I can see why they'd be angry because I know where the root of their anger is about this. To them, they assume that using a name of the Prophet is demeaning to him even though the intention was not even that in the first place. I guess that is how they want interpret it.
Mohammed is the prophet's main name, but he also has other names like Ahmad, Mustafa,etc...
