Australian mum gives birth to mega-baby
An Australian woman gave birth to an incredibly large baby last week.
Chelsea Rose Mackay (left — duh!) weighed nearly twice as much as the average baby at birth. Wearing nappies and a onsie for a six-month-old, she was more than five times as long as another baby at the same hospital (and pictured), Melinda Burns, who was two months premature.
6.28kg and 55cm long.
Chelsea’s mum knew her baby would be large — she said her stomach was huge. But still she was suprised after the baby was born via a planned c-section (doctors were worried Chelsea wouldn’t fit through the mum’s pelvis).
How’d the baby get so big? It probably had something to do with Mum’s diet. She says she ate “stockman’s tucker and also snacked on icy poles while pregnant.”

Wow. I wish we could see a picture of the mom.
Glad he's okay. I bet the cause of his weight gain was something like undiagnosed gestational diabetes...

That was my first thought too! My mum had it with both pregnancies, I was full-term and weighed 11 pounds 4 oz, and my little sister was two months premature and weighed 7 pounds. The docs said if she hadn't been so prem she might have gotten to 14 pounds!
Does it say how heavy this not-so-wee one was? I don't know if I was being dense not seeing her weight lol.

Do giant people start off as giant babies? Or are they normal-sized babies who just grow really fast?

It is true that bnirth weight isn't always an indication. Both my babies were on the big side (9 lbers) but are smaller than their peers as older children. Hubby and I are both under 5'6.
Still, that particular baby has a face that reminds me of those I have seen/met with giantism. The wide set apart eyes, the long nose...the square jaw.
