Florida teens charged as adults in locker room rape

TAMPA, FLA. Four Tampa teenagers were charged as adults this week on allegations of sexually assaulting a classmate, Hillsborough County prosecutors said.

According to incident reports, the teenagers raped the 13-year-old victim on several occasions over a period of a couple of months, using a hockey stick and a broomstick.

The lead prosecutor said several people witnessed the attacks, but nobody reported them, including the victim. Prosecutor Kimberly Hindman told the court that the victim's screams could be heard outside the locker room where the alleged attacks took place.

Hindman said two defendants held the victim down, while two others attacked him.

The alleged attacks took place at Walker Middle School, according to authorities. News of the episode first surfaced when a fight on the school football field, involving the victim, prompted an investigation.

According to Hindman, the defendants admitted to the sexual assaults in a written statement after school officials questioned them.

The victim, Hindman said, did not acknowledge the attack until he was questioned by school officials. They then notified law enforcement officials.

Three of the teens involved are under the age of 14, while one is 15, but were all charged as adults Wednesday
on four counts each of sexual battery. If convicted on all counts, they could each face 120 years in prison.

In court, defense attorneys described the defendants as good students who had never been in trouble before.

The mother of one defendant said her son had described some "clowning around" in the locker room.

Three of the four teens, who were all booked into the adult wing of the County jail, bonded out Thursday and are under house arrest, jail officials said.

I think 'kids' who are charged as adults should serve their time in adult prisons, right along side their peers of rapists and killers.
