I'm not about to pay for something I can get somewhere else for free. If a record is good, I will buy it, but downloading helps weed out the cds that have 2 good songs and the rest are crap and filler. At $16 a pop, I dont have the extra cash to be playing russian roulette with my cd choices. If artists or record labels would continuously put out GOOD stuff, then I would stop downloading, no problem.

My .02 from a total computer idiot, I downloaded Ares and copped a handful of songs, then my CD rom stopped working for some reason. Then some other wierd things started happening to my desktop. Couldn't get the CD rom to work for love or money, the door wouldn't open, there was no evidence of the drive, no program, no nothing. Uninstalled Ares and "poof", back came my D drive. Scares me now.

Limewire is decent (but illegal). For legal downloads from all over the world, with lots of new, undiscovered artists, there is http://music.download.com/ which is a ton of fun. Everything from bagpipes to indie music from Oregon to weird Hungarian television soundtracks to Middle Eastern stuff. Not a lot of well-known things, though. You can also subscribe to the iTunes newsletter, which has a free download of the week, as does MTV.com. Umm...I also get things from blog sites, like perezhilton.com, oilyfingers.com, dirtymango.com, (same person, two sites with a music download page; don't know if all the links still work, though) and the Just Jared site. A little here, a little there, fills my iPod up nicely.
