    Cool

Really afraid to admit this but...Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime. I was feeling a bit nostalgic for 80's metal I guess. I can honestly say that I haven't heard of many of the artists mentioned.

Whipping Post - The Allman Brothers Band.. I am seriously obsessed with this song at the moment.. I think I've listened to it over 100 times in the past week.

    Roger Sanchez - Another Chance

If I had another chance tonight
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right
If I had another chance tonight
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right
If I had another chance tonight
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right
If I had another chance tonight
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right
If I had another chance tonight
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right
If I had another chance tonight
If I had another chance tonight
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right
If I had another chance tonight
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right

i can never criticize a tmf album. ... i love this album - it's got such a light, bubbly, joyful sound. a couple of tracks sound almost minstrel-esque, some have got a 60s/70s vibe to them and then others are more folky tunes drowned in a romantic atmosphere. i was hooked when i heard the first notes of 'painted flower'. since then, i've played it pretty much non-stop. i think i'm on my 38th listen already, i even listened to it this morning at 5 AM... if it's not the music that draws you in (i love his use of the toy piano, btw. and did you hear that lemony snicket plays the accordian on this album?), it's the lyrics. he's one of pop music's finest lyricists. jens lekman is another one of those rare few. also, one of the things i like about stephin, is that he never seems to lose that sarcastic streak he has. it makes his retellings of everyday things that much more insightful. god, i love him. the magnetic fields are an awesome band. favourite songs on this album : 'painted flower', 'the dada polka', 'from a sinking boat', 'you must be out of your mind', 'interlude', 'everything is one big christmas tree' and 'seduced and abandoned'. it's not a groundbreaking record in any way but it's a collection of songs that can proudly stand alongside the earlier records, imo.

    seduced and abandoned
    and baby makes two
    baby abandoned by you

    seduced and abandoned
    and what can i do?
    i think i might drink a few,
yes, i think i might drink a few
and maybe the baby will too.

yeah i pretty much agree with everything you said. and i LOVE 'seduced and abandoned'. stephen merritt is a genius. not just the lyrics, but his cheeky, deadpan deliveries. even when at his most romantic and theatrical, there's always a little bit of bite to his songs. and i love that he doesn't take himself that seriously. and i've always drawn a parallel between them and jens lekman as well. they are both very pop but what makes it work so well without being too sugary or twee or annoying is the sense of humour behind them, and also the surprising amount of depth and insight he can bring to songs about such silly things as getting a haircut ('you're the drop of blood in my glass of milk' has got to be one of my favourite lines from a song ever).

i also love the folksy, minstrel sound the album has, there's just something very light and joyous about the whole thing. i don't know if i could pick one favourite but 'seduced and abandoned', 'from a sinking boat', 'walk a lonely road', 'the dada polka' (i can imagine them dressed up as some 60s folk family act for that one), 'you must be out of your mind', 'everything is one big christmas tree'... the whole thing is all pretty gorgeous actually.
